Common Polypody: Polypodium
Volgare.
This belongs to the class of non-flowering plants. It is a fern which grows only on acid rocks and tree trunks in Ireland.
Large, red-brown sori (spore cases) are prominent on the underside of leaflets - 10 to 20 pairs. The creeping rhizome is covered with reddish scales.
The common polypody is seen here growing on the oak tree,
their supply of nutrients comes from rain and dust. Such plants
are known as epiphytes.
