Common Whitebeam: Fioncholl: Sorbus hibernica.
The silvery white leaves of this tree unfold in Spring. It can grow to a height of 15m and it likes chalky soils.
Trunk: well defined.
Bark: grey, smooth, becoming flaky and fissured.
Crown: conical in young trees, later broadly domed, branches angled upwards.
Twigs: olive brown, hairy, becoming smooth
Leaves: alternate, 8cm, usually broad oval, edges sharply toothed, silvery hairy, especially below, stalkless.
Flowers: in white clusters.
Fruit: Berry-like, ripening scarlet.
The wood is fine-grained, berry hard and white, excellent for
wood turning.
