Objectives
The main Mayo County Council objectives are:
- To secure a safe and comprehensive road system to satisfy the commercial, agricultural, tourist and industrial needs of County Mayo.
- To ensure that every family in County Mayo can obtain a dwelling of good standard, located in an acceptable environment at a price or rent that they can afford.
- To protect the natural environment of County Mayo and to encourage renewal and redevelopment, and a visually attractive County.
- To assist in the proper exploitation of the natural and industrial resources of County Mayo in order to maximise employment opportunities.
- To provide other essential public services in order to improve living conditions and the quality of life for everyone in County Mayo.
In seeking to secure these objectives, regard was had to the following:
- Maintenance of services that are essential at the best possible level.
- Consolidation of progress made in recent years in undertaking extensive capital projects.
- Ensuring balanced development of the Council's services.
- Seeking to ensure the continued employment of the Council's permanent workforce and to assist in creating sustainable employment in County Mayo.
- Maximising the benefits of Exchequer and European Community Support Grants and initiatives.
- Continuing to support the main industries in County Mayo, i.e. manufacturing, tourism, agriculture and fishing.
- Striving to improve the efficiency of the services provided.
Mayo County Councillors have displayed a sense of initiative in their decision making which has helped to create a climate of enterprise in Mayo.
The person charged with the responsibility of running the county is the County Manager - Des Mahon.
