The Roads Programme for Mayo County Council is one of the high activity areas of its operations. Due to the fact that the county is the third largest in Ireland and also based on the topographical nature of the landscape and demographic population trend the level of roads to be maintained and improved is relatively high. The County Council has responsibility for providing and maintaining each and every public road in the county, not an easy task when you consider that there are nearly 6,500 km of roadway in County Mayo.

The National Primary Roads
- N5 Westport/Swinford/Charlestown to Roscommon county boundary
near Ballaghaderreen is a main access road to Dublin from County
Mayo.
- N17 passes from County Sligo into Charlestown then Knock,
Claremorris, Ballindine and into County Galway.
- N26 Ballina to Swinford.
represent only 2.2% of total road mileage in Mayo but carry 10% of the total traffic.
In 1995, the total funding available for the maintenance and improvements of all the above roads was £21,021,000
Public Lighting
Provision is made in Public Lighting for to upgrade the existing
network throughout the county. During 1995 work was undertaken in
Belmullet and Kiltimagh.
In 1996 work will be carried out in Ballinrobe, Ballina, Ballyhaunis,
Belmullet, Castlebar, Foxford, Kilmaine, Shrule, and Swinford
Road Safety Awareness
In support of its programme of continuous Road Improvement
Schemes, the Council also promotes road safety awareness among all
road users.
It assists with the operation of Junior Warden Scheme at the Scoil
Paraic Boys National School, Ballina. The Junior Wardens are a source
of great pride to the parents, the school, the County Council and the
Gardai (who train the Junior Wardens Teams each year).
