Water Supply and Sewerage
County Mayo, Ireland
1995 saw further improvements in the county's sanitary services.
£14.27 million was expended on new schemes in 1995. Over the
past 5 years, over £48 million has been expended on Capital
Schemes. Work in progress and in planning is in excess of £150
million at current day prices.
Ballinrobe Sewerage Scheme
This Scheme was completed in mid 1995 at a cost of almost £9
million. The existing water supply distribution network in the towns
has also been replaced and all of the streets in the core of the town
are fully reconstructed. A new lighting system has also been provided
in a partnership between the Council and local business people.
Hollymount Sewerage Scheme
The new Sewage Treatment Plant at Hollymount was commissioned in
1995 and a total of 39 properties are connected to the new works.
Bangor Erris Sewerage and Sewage Disposal Scheme
A
new sewerage scheme was completed and commissioned in Bangor Erris in
1995 at an overall cost of £1.8 million. The new scheme, to
which 160 properties are connected improves water quality in the
Owenmore River - an important spawning and fishing river.
Foxford Water Supply Improvements
This Scheme provided for the augmentation of Foxford's water
supply from Lough Muck and included the construction of new sections
of the raw water main. The work was carried out by direct labour at
an estimated cost of £100,000.
Lough Mask Regional Scheme - Extension to Claremorris and Ballindine
The Scheme involves the laying of 24 kms of pipelines and a
reservoir at Claremorris. The new pipelines will bring a fully
treated water supply from Lough Mask to Claremorris and Ballindine to
meet the existing and future domestic, commercial and industrial
demands of the regions. Overall a projected population of 7,300
people will benefit from the Scheme and the pipe sizes being
constructed will ensure that additional capacity will be available
for further extensions of the Scheme, e.g. Ballyhaunis and Knock.
Robeen and Carras
Extensions will be provided in 1996 providing water for
approximately 600 mainly agricultural users.
Ballina Regional Water Supply Scheme
This scheme will augment the existing pumping capacity helping to
ensure continuity of raw water supply to the treatment works at
Lisglennon, Asahi and other planned industrial developments. The
scheme will improve the overall efficiency and economy of the system,
at a cost of £0.5 million.
Erris Regional Water Supply Scheme - Belmullet
The new scheme will replace the existing mains and will ensure a
high quality supply throughout the town. The estimated cost is
£0.34 million.
Shrule Water Supply
The proposed scheme will result in a higher quality water supply
for Shrule and its hinterlands at an estimated cost of £80,000.
Work will be completed by early 1996.
Achill Regional Water Supply Scheme
The laying of a new arterial main from the Water Treatment Plant
for a distance of 8 kms. will double the volume of water available to
the Island.
Under Development
Many other schemes are under development which will improve the water supply including: Ballina, Ballyhaunis, Claremorris, Cong, Crossmolina, Kilmaine, Shrule, Westport
