The Mweelrea Mountain Range
County Mayo

Mweelrea Mountain (814m) is the highest point in Mayo and in the province of Connaught and is guarded on all sides by craggy slopes giving the impression that it is unconquerable.

The Mweelrea Mountain Range in County Mayo

It consists of five peaks flanked on one side by Killary Harbour, Ireland's only true fjord and on the other side by Doolough Pass, a glaciated valley. There are magnificent views from the top including the Atlantic Ocean, Ben Gorm Mountains, Twelve Bens, Maumturks and Sheeffry Hills.

This mighty mountain needs to be approached with care and there are no easy ascents. Mweelrea can be very dangerous, particularly in mist, fog or wind and is not for beginners. Reserve a clear day for the climb and enjoy the panorama of the mountains, coast and surrounding islands. Please be careful.

Many thanks to Mr Paul Moore for use of this footage of Mweelrea Mountain.
