Call To Move Bank Holiday To End Of August

A call has been made on the Government to move the traditional August Bank Holiday towards the end of the month in line with UK.

According to the Irish Caravan Council (ICC) this would give a much needed extension to the peak holiday season. ICC chairman, Nora Heraty from Westport said the combination of the traditional holiday fortnight and Bank Holiday created a saturation situation in early August.

She said: "That is far from ideal for any tourist provider. For many operators this period heralds the end of their all too-brief peak season.

"Moving the Bank Holiday towards the end of August would do much to allow for an extension of the season."

Government Chief Whip Jim Higgins said he saw no reason why the Bank Holiday could not be moved to the end of August.

He said: "There may well be a lot of head-scratching by Civil Servants, but they will have to put forward a very strong reason for why we cannot synchronise the holiday weekend so that it is in line with the UK."
