COUNCIL RAPPED OVER ISLAND PRIORITY LISTS
A TOP level meeting will take place on Friday between officials of the Irish Islands Federation and Mayo County Council in a bid to agree on a list of priorities on works to be undertaken on the inhabited islands off the Mayo coast.
At a special general meeting of the Federation at the weekend disappointment was expressed that Mayo County Council had not listened to the islanders views in drawing up priority lists for funding projects.
Meanwhile, the 32 delegates at the islands meeting unanimously passed a motion noting with alarm and regret that Mayo County Council Islands Committee failed to include on its priority list feasibility funding from the Interdepartmental Islands Committee for the cable car project planned for Inishbiggle island.
The motion called on the Minister with responsibility for island development Donal Carey to request the Interdepartmental Committee to communicate with Mayo Island's committee requesting them to put the cable car project on its priority list and also seeking ú40,000 for the Inishbiggle co-op to meet the cost of the feasibility study which is ongoing.
Island Federation spokesperson Patricia Quinn said: "We are alarmed by the fact that two Inishbiggle islanders almost lost their lives recently in their attempt to negotiate the treacherous channel at Bulls Mouth and we ask for an immediate positive response to this resolution before a real tragedy occurs."
Now representatives of the Federation will meet with Mayo County Council officials at 2.30p.m. on
Friday to discuss the crux.
