Large resigns as Town manager

Paul Large has resigned as manager of Ballina Town F.C. after over two years in charge, writes TOM KELLY.

He informed the club of his decision by letter on Tuesday, November 12th. His last match in charge of the team was last Sunday when Town defeated St. Peter's Athlone 1-0, the goal coming from Michael Horan, one of the new signings Large brought to the club.

Large, who lives in Westport , said his decision to step down was based on a number of factors. He explained: "I have been informed that, as a result of the serious knee injury I sustained in training, I would be unwise to consider playing again.

"I never envisaged being a manager and not a player and this news has affected me deeply.

"Without the option of being able to contribute on the field, the job of manager is not something I desire.

"My personal and professional commitments are such that I feel now is the right time to stand down.

"Whilst our current results are somewhat disappointing, I believe I leave the club in a much stronger position than when I joined in July, 1994.

"I thank the players for all their efforts, my assistant Leo Tierney for his patience and expertise, and Harry McCaffertey for his enthusiasm and help at training.

"I thank the committee for Ballina Town for their assistance, especially Sean McCarthy and Paddy Flynn.

"I wish the club the very best of luck and continued success. I have enjoyed my time in charge and will continue to help in any way possible."

His decision represents a major blow for Ballina Town. It is understood the club will move swiftly to appoint Leo Tierney as his successor.
