The first motor home manufactured in Ireland has been unveiled by Shamrock Motor Homes Ltd., Kiltimagh.

The launch of the 'Emerald' range of motor homes is the culmination of many years of hard work and dreaming for Pat McNicholas, the company's managing director.

Mr Tom Higgins, head salesman, said: "It's a proud day for the McNicholas family who have been in business for generations and a dream has come through for Pat with a top of the range motor home on the market.

"It's also a proud day for Kiltimagh with this motor home being launched. It's a proud day for Mayo as hopefully a large industry will prosper here due to Pat's initiative."

Speaking at the launch Government chief whip, Mr Jim Higgins, said: "Pat McNicholas has seen a niche in the market. The Irish have developed a capacity to see where the gap is and move into it. Pat has identified this gap and moved into it."

Shamrock Motor Homes hopes to build 25 to 30 vehicles in the first year employing about nine people. "In four or five years time it is hoped to be building about 100 a year employing 20 to 30 people."

Initially the product is aimed at the Irish and UK market but it is hoped to extend the market to Europe in time. Already an order for 15 motor homes has been confirmed.
