Maria wins prestigious Piano Award

A Ballyhaunis student has captured one of the most prestigious Piano Awards in Ireland.

Maria McGarry was the winner of the Morris Grant Cup and Bursary at the recent Dublin Feis Ceoil. The Bursary is valued at £2,500 and is awarded on an annual basis to the most outstanding pianist of the Feis.

As winner of the John Piggott Cup for Senior Advanced Piano playing, Maria went on to perform Mussorhsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" to secure the Bursary Award.

Now, Maria has been invited to perform in the R.D.S. Centenary Bursary in June. She will also represent Ireland in the European Music Competition for Youth which will be staged next October.

Maria is currently studying for an B.A. in Music Performance with Professor Therese Fahy at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin.

She was a piano finalist in the recent "Musician of the Future" and has given many recitals around Dublin.

A former student of Ballyhaunis Community School, Maria is daughter of Gerry and Pauline McGarry, Devlis, Ballyhaunis.

PEOPLE IN NEED KARAOKE

The staff at Dunnes Stores have organised a karaoke evening in the Welcome Inn Hotel, Castlebar on Wednesday evening next. The proceeds go to the People In Need fund.

WESTPORT VIDEO PRIZE

Students of the Convent of Mercy, Westport , with a piece entitled 'An Dreoilin' were provincial winners of the recent Teilifis na Gaeilge video competition.

The awards ceremony was held as part of Slogadh ‘96 in Ennis with the winning team receiving a VCR as a prize.

SCOUT DEN OPENING

The official opening of the Castlebar Scout Troops new den at St. Gerald's Centre, Chapel Street, Castlebar will take place on Sunday.

The ceremony will commence with Mass at 2p.m. followed by a parade through the town. The CBSI scouts have ben active in Castlebar for over 60 years and are the oldest troop in Mayo.

SAN FRANCISCO DEATH

The death has taken place in San Francisco, following an accident of Mr. Martin (Scoby) Gormally (30) of Kilaphrasogue, Milltown, Tuam who was brother of Fr. Michael Gormally, administrator on Clare island and Inishturk Island.

He is also survived by his mother Katie, brothers Fr. Michael, Joseph and Peter, sisters, Mary, Margaret, Eileen and Cathy to whom sympathy is extended.

CAMPUS TALKS

An opening evening for second level students will take place at the Castlebar RTC campus this (Wednesday) evening from 6.30 to 9p.m.

Scheduled talks on the various courses available at the centre will be given at regular intervals during the evening.

SNUGBORO CAKE SALE

Snugboro Foroige will hold a cake sale in Snugboro community centre on Sunday commencing at 2.30p.m. All are welcome.
