Connaught SENIOR LEAGUE PREMIERSHIP

College take title as Straide & Foxford miss opportunity

By Tom Kelly

University College Galway were crowned Connaught Senior League Premiership champions for the second time on Sunday. . .despite slipping up 2-1 in their final match away to Sligo Rovers.

Straide & Foxford United failed to take advantage of the College defeat when they were held 2-2 by Mervue United. A win by Straide & Foxford would, in the circumstances, have ensured them of a play-off for the title.

Declan Smyth and John Jordan were on the mark for Straide & Foxford.

The Mervue goal-scorers were Aiden Forde and Gabriel Higgins.

Everybody associated with Straide & Foxford were bitterly disappointed when they learned the result from Sligo.

Two goals by John Lynch ensured Rovers of a surprise win. College's only reply came from Harry Costello.

Ballina Town pipped for promotion

Ballina Town have been pipped for promotion from Division One of the Connaught Senior League.

Victory over Gentex F.C. at Belleek on Sunday with goals by Michael Horan and Brian Heffernan was not enough to snatch the second promotion place.

Galway Hibs took the position by one point following their 2-1 win over St. Peter's Athlone with goals by Mike Kelly and Brian Carroll.

Ballinasloe Town are Division One champions, while Salthill Devon are relegated from the top flight.
