Achill Rovers break new ground

Achill Rovers have reached a Connaught final for the first time in their history by defeating a highly touted Newcastle in the penultimate round of the Connaught (Under-17) Cup

Rovers started well with their leading scorer, Kieran Gallagher, hitting the net twice inside twenty minutes. With Niall O'Donnell adding a third before half time, Achill looked good for the final.

Newcastle dominated the first twenty minutes of the second half and had two goals from Shane Cunningham and Joe Lawless. With the game in the balance, it was Achill who came out on top when Fintan Cunningham slotted home their fourth goal to clinch them a cup final place.

For Achill, Kieran Gallagher, Niall O'Donnell, John B. Keane and 'keeper Colm Gallagher were excellent.

P. Joyce, Paul Kielty and Joe Lawless were best for Newcastle.
