Big match colour clash averted
A potential flashpoint over colours has been averted before Sunday's All-Ireland senior football championship semi-final between Mayo and Kerry at Croke Park, writes TOM KELLY.
It is understood Mayo manager John Maughan wanted his charges to play in their traditional green and red strip, and clarification was sought from the G.A.A. authorities. When Mayo last met Kerry at the venue in 1981, they were forced to change into white gear with Kerry lining out in blue.
Now it has been made clear by Croke Park officials that both sides can play in their traditional colours . . .despite the predominance of the colour green on both sets of jerseys.
Said John Maughan, Mayo manager: "There won't be a problem. The green on the Mayo strip is completely different from that on the Kerry strip."
Mayo's biggest injury worry for the game concerns Ballina midfield ace David Brady. He pulled a hamstring in training.
Maughan said Brady was responding very well to treatment and had a fifty-fifty chance of playing.
In the Connaught Telegraph's comprehensive and colourful coverage of the big match stretching over eight pages, the Mayo boss gives his first major interview since taking over the position last October.
Sports Editor and Chief G.A.A. writer John Melvin gives his perceptive view of Mayo's prospects.
There are also the views of T.J. Kilgallon, former Mayo midfield star, Dermot Earley, the former Kildare manager, and Noel Connelly, captain of the Mayo team.
Our team of top writers also takes readers behind the scenes of the Mayo
minor squad as they prepare to tackle Kerry.
