IRISH SHORTWAVE BROADCAST

Special shortwave broadcasts from Ireland will mark this year's Irish National Holiday - St. Patrick's Day. Mid West Radio will make broadcasting history on St Patrick's Day when it will become the first Irish Station to broadcast worldwide in six languages on the same day - German, French, Spanish, Italian, Irish and English.

The schedule will include six hours of broadcasting, from 12 pm to 4 pm and from 12 midnight to 2 am (Irish Times) which will be fed through powerful UK based shortwave transmitters. The first phase will cover Europe and Africa on a frequency of 11715 Khz in the 25 m band. The second phase from 12 midnight to 2 am (7pm to 9pm Eastern Standard Time) will serve North America ie the USA and Canada on the frequency 7325 Khz in the 41 m band.

Programme Content The continental language programmes will be compiled by teams of four or five people who are fluent in their respective languages and who have been living in Co Mayo for a number of years. For the first time from Ireland we will be speaking about our region to the people of France, Germany and Spain in their own language. The music content of these programmes will be of a traditional and Irish Flavour. The North American link will be aimed at the vast Irish diaspora and feature such items as tracing of Irish ancestry, a brief round up of the games from Croke Park and other sporting results and news. Also included will be "live" phone-ins and the content of music will be country, traditional and Irish. The North American link will also be transmitted simultaneously on Mid West Radio.
