HISTORIC POST FOR BETTY
MS. BETTY Evans, Aglish Estate, Castlebar has been appointed manager of the Hibernian Insurance office, the first woman in Ireland to hold such a prestigious position.She will replace Mr. Michael Murphy who will be retiring in the near future.
MOOREHALL RESTORATION
THE MINISTER for Tourism and Trade, Enda Kenny has informed the Moorehall Restoration Society that he would look favourably at a £3.5m blueprint to rebuild the home of John Moore, the first president of Connaught.Mr. Johnny Walsh, a member of the Society told a meeting of the Fine Gael District Executive in Castlebar of the up-to-date position regarding a meeting they had with the Minister.
The house on the shores of Lough Carra, which was burned to the ground ion the 1920s, was also the home of author George Moore whose remains are interned on one of the islands on the lake.
KILMAINE MEETING
A PUBLIC meeting will be held in the Community hall, Kilmaine on Tuesday night (8.30p.m.) To give details of the range of support programmes now available in the area,Speakers will make presentations dealing with LEADER 11, Mayo County Enterprise Board and the Local development programme as they apply to the South Mayo area.
All are welcome to attend and there is no cover charge.
DRINK POLICY SOUGHT
DOTHAIN, the Mayo movement against the abuse of alcohol, has written to the six Mayo Dail deputies asking them to outline their parties policies on drink in general and the abuse of the licensing laws.At a meeting in Castlebar concern was expressed at the alarming numbers of young people drinking. It was pointed out that 97% of Leaving Certificate and 65% of Junior Certificate students were now getting access through one means or another to alcohol.
The annual general meeting of Dothain will be held in the sacred Heart Home, Castlebar on Wednesday (February 28) and will be open to members of the public and all who are interested in furthering the aims and objectives of the movement.
ERRIS LEADER RESOLUTION
THE MINISTER for State at the Department of Agriculture, Mr. Jimmy Deenihan will meet with representatives of the business community of Belmullet and Erris today (Wednesday) in a bid to iron out "outstanding matters" in relation to the signing of the LEADER 11 contract for the Erris area.The meeting between the Minister and Eamon O'Boyle and Tom Mallon has been set up by Trade and Industry Minister Enda Kenny who was confident that a satisfactory conclusion would be reached.
TOP DESIGN AWARD
MAYO COUNTY Council, Architects section have been highly commended for the Mill Street housing scheme in Westport in the inaugural design Award Scheme fort Local Authoirty Housing.
