Clar I.R.D.

The chairman of Clar IRD, Jimmy Nally, has extended thanks to FAS for renewing the contract for the Community Employment Scheme. Speaking at a recent meeting, he conveyed special thanks and appreciation to Padraig Lydon from FAS in Castlebar for all his help and assistance.

Jimmy also thanked the Clare Lake Development Committee, the Tidy Towns Association, the Racecourse Trustees, Ballindine Community Council, and other affiliated groups who co-operated in the operation and control of the scheme.

It was decided the Board should contact all the affiliated groups with a view to co-ordinating the operation of a scheme to cover smaller communities. All those with an interest in this idea should contact the IRD office.

Clar IRD is supporting a call by the Claremorris Chamber of Commerce for further industrial employment in the town. The committee feel the moving of resources from the region, especially timber resources, was a severe drain on the economy of the West. They wished the Chamber every success in their attempts to attract industry to the town.

Changes to the speed limit areas in the area have been proposed by Cllr. Pat Higgins. He says the current limits need to be extended in a number of towns and villages and he has submitted a notice of motion to Mayo County Council in this regard.

They hope work will commence on this project towards the back end of the year.

Tipperary blues!

Tipperary blues! Tipperary natives in this part of the country certainly feel like singing the blues this week after watching their beloved county lose out to Limerick in the replay of the Munster senior hurling final in Cork last Sunday. P.J. Gleeson, James Street, was in Cork for the big game. Matt O'Donovan of the AIB, Claremorris, felt he could "bank" on Tipperary on this occasion! Out in Irishtown, Eleanor Roche is refusing to sing "Limerick You're A Lady"!

Prior General for Ballinasmale Abbey Mass

The Prior General of the Carmelite Order, Most Rev. The outdoor Mass in Ballinasmale attracts hundreds of people each year, not alone from the Claremorris and Knock areas but also from a much wider region. The directors of the Credit Union have felt for sometime that the absence of street name signs was an omission which should be addressed in the area.

A spokesperson for the Credit Union said they were pleased to mark their community involvement by providing these signs as an acknowledgement to the people of the area for the continuing support of the Credit Union in Claremorris.

Thanks has also been extended to Mayo County Council for their support and encouragement and manpower and the erection of all the signs will be completed shortly.

His passing has caused deep sorrow in the neighbourhood where Des was known as a quiet, hard-working, and very conscientious young man.

The very large attendances at the funeral ceremonies were a true reflection of the great sense of sorrow felt throughout the entire community and the measure of support for his parents and brothers in their time of great grief.
