CROAGH PATRICK CLIMB - TAKE THREE

Connaught Telegraph 24 Jul 1996

RTE's Western correspondent Jim Fahy and his "Nationwide" team will climb Croagh Patrick THREE times this weekend to make a unique television documentary on Ireland's Holy Mountain, which will be broadcast on Monday on RTE One at 7p.m.

The main Croagh Patrick pilgrimage, which attracts up to 40,000 people of all ages, takes place on Sunday.

On Friday several hundred will take part in the traditional "Garland Friday" climb while on Saturday many pilgrims keep up the old tradition of climbing the Reek in the dark.

To capture the atmosphere of the three separate pilgrimages the "Nationwide" team will follow the progress of the different groups who make the difficult climb to the summit of the 2,510 ft high mountain.

The programme will also look at the recent archaeological discoveries which have been made on top of Croagh Patrick and try to unravel the pagan past with the help of archaeologist Michael Gibbons.

On Sunday Masses will be celebrated on the summit hourly from 8am to 3pm and the 10am Mass will be in Irish.
