SUDDEN DEATH OF
MRS. MARY LAVELLE

The sudden death has taken place of Mrs. Mary Lavelle (nee Gibbons) of Cahir, Louisburgh and Kensington. London. She was wife of Mr. Tony Lavelle whose name is synonymous with the Castlebar and District Association in London.

Mrs. Lavelle was holidaying in the Louisburgh area when she was taken ill. Her remains were removed from Sweeny's Funeral Home, Louisburgh to St. Patrick's Church, Louisburgh last evening (Tuesday). Requiem Mass will take place this (Wednesday) morning at 12 noon after which interment will take place in Killeen cemetery.

The deceased is survived by her husband Tony, daughter Josephine, sons Kevin and Colin, brothers Paddy, Davey and Michael, sisters Kitty and Chris, son-in-law Tommy Lyons, daughter-in-law Dawn, grandchildren Orla, Robert and Katie, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, relatives and friends to whom deepest sympathy is extended on their great loss.

CHESHIRE HOME CELEBRATIONS

President Mary Robinson will be the guest of honour at the O'Dwyer Cheshire Home, Lismirrane Bohola, on Sunday August 25 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the opening of the complex. The management committee of the Cheshire Home plan special celebrations to mark the occasion.

COUNTY REGISTRAR'S LAST CIRCUIT COURT

Mayo County Registrar, Mr. Patsy Urban Murphy will attend his final Circuit Court before Judge Harvey Kenny in Castlebar tomorrow (Thursday) before his retirement next month.

Mr. Murphy, from Ballinrobe has been County Registrar for the past ten years.

FINE GAEL COLLECTION

The national collection of the Fine Gael Party will be taken up throughout Mayo at Church gates on Saturday evening and Sunday morning August 3 and 4.

Constituency funds for the party need a boost with a pending general election next year.

WATER SAFETY COURSES

The National Safety Council will hold instructions in swimming and lifesaving from July 29 to August 3 at Belmullet, Rinroe (Carratigue) and Dooega in Achill.

GARDEN OPEN DAY

An open day will be held at the award-winning garden of Pete and Wyn Aldous at Ballinamarra, Islandeady, Castlebar on Sunday August 4 from 2-6p.m. Admission is £2 and all the proceeds will go to the Western Care Association.

The garden includes perennial island beds, shrub garden, water and bog gardens and rock garden..

Those wishing to attend the open day should take the main road from Castlebar to Westport for approximately four miles. Turn left at Aughagower and follow the signs.

GLAUCOMA CAMPAIGN SUCCESS

The 5th national Glaucoma Awareness campaign, which was launched on July 5, proved a great success in its first week.

The mobile unit travelled to Donegal, Ballyshannon, Sligo, Ballina and Castlebar. The numbers of people screened in these areas was 1,180. Of these 5% were diagnosed as having pressure in the eye above the acceptable level and were referred for further treatment.

This signifies how important the Irish Fight for sight Glaucoma Awareness Campaign really is making the public aware of the dangers of blindness resulting from Glaucoma.

ERRIS FOLK ARTS FESTIVAL

A major international Folk Arts festival is being planned for Erris at the end of August.

Iorras '96 will highlight the quality of the local culture of the region and will feature international groups from Finland, Italy and Bolivia along with local traditional music, dance and cultural groups.

While it will be staged through the Erris region from August 28 to September 1, events have already been planned for Each Leim, Elly bay, Belmullet, Ceathru Thaidgh, Goath Saile, Doohoma, Glenamoy and Bangor. Further details can be obtained on 097-82247.

SNUGBORO SCHOOL PROGRESS

Government Chief Whip, Jim Higgins has received confirmation from the Minister for Education that the department had received the list of contractors to be considered for the work from the chairman of the Board of management at Snugboro NS, Castlebar.

Minister Higgins said the successful contractor for the school extension would be announced shortly.

BASKETBALL COURSE

Two pupils from Dunmore Community School, Pamela Keadin, Claremorris Road, Cloonfad and Ruth Kelly, Flaskagh, Cloonfad are presently participating in a basketball coaching course in St.. Augustines College, Dungarvan, Co. Waterford

COUNCIL MOURN PASSING OF DICK MORRIN

The annual general meeting of Mayo County Council, held in Castlebar on Monday, was adjourned as a mark of respect to the late Mr. Dick Morrin, who had been a member of the authority for the past fourteen years.

Glowing tributes were paid to Mr. Morrin by colleagues, council officials and members of the Press.

NEPHIN PARK PLANS

The Office of Public Works will present a report on the proposed Nephin National Park, the biggest of its kind in Ireland, to members of Mayo County Council in the council chamber on Monday morning.

GREAT SKATE

Alfred Ball from the Ulstern Angling Club in south Hampton landed a 163 lb great skate while fishing in Clew bay out of Westport with skipper Francis Clarke. A group of Dover anglers caught 30 ray which weighed up to 19 lbs and three tope up to 28 lbs.

Meanwhile Dick Duncaffe from Ross, Castlebar took a 27 lb link while fishing off Achill.
