Drug-watch Scheme mooted for Islands

Off-shore communities have been asked to mount a "drug watch" scheme to counter the activities of smugglers who are shipping deadly cargoes into this country.

The remote rugged coastline, dotted with tiny coves, gives great cover to the clandestine operations of the drug barons.

But with the help of island inhabitants and fishing communities these illegal activities could be thwarted, according to Deputy Michael Ring.

"People living off our coast usually monitor passing traffic. They should report any suspicious craft, particularly those who shelter in harbours but do not disembark." he said.

"Fishermen too, know all the local boats and indeed many of the visiting yachts. Strange craft would stand out, particularly if they seem to be acting in an unusual manner."

Deputy Ring said since the automation of most lighthouses passing shipping was not monitored to any great degree..

He added: "A scheme should be put in place where unemployed people could be taken on to chart the name and number of passing vessels.

"This information could prove invaluable to the authorities in their fight to stem the importation of illegal drug shipments."
