WESTARO SUPER CUP

Claremorris and Erris in Westaro Super Cup bid

Claremorris and Erris United will contest the inaugural final of the Mayo Super Cup, sponsored by Westaro Hosing Limited, Turlough, Castlebar.

The game is being provisionally fixed for Milebush on Saturday evening next, but confirmation was not available at the time of going to press.

Claremorris booked their pace in the decider with a 3-0 victory over Westport United at Milebush on Wednesday. Despite losing influential defender Michael Shaughnessy after fifteen minutes with a foot injury, they were always in control of the game.

Another Claremorris defender, Steve Ring, was also forced to dry off at half-time with a foot injury.

Goals by Maurice Walsh, Noel McGuinness and 17-years-old striker Kieran Kilkenny ensured Claremorris of their place in the decider.

McGuinness's strike was notable, a lob from 25-yards which caught out Westport goalkeeper Martin McGreal.

Kevin Ring, as stand-in sweeper, and Michael McVann, who deputised for Steve Ring, had particularly good games.

Sweet revenge for Erris

Erris United scored a sweet 2-1 victory over Manulla in the penultimate round of the Westaro Super Cup at Milebush on Thursday.

Two first half goals by Eric Reilly and John Mangan gave them the edge over a Manulla side struggling for consistency.

Alan Rumley pulled a goal back for Manulla in the 80th minute, but Erris held their nerve to secure a deserved win.
