HOLIDAY ARRANGEMENTS

The Office and printing works of the Connaught Telegraph will be closed on August Bank Holiday Monday.

Advertisements and copy for next weeks edition should reach us by the latest at 3p.m. on Friday to ensure inclusion.

LONGER DRINKING HOURS SOUGHT

Publicans in Mayo want a change in the country's pub opening hours. Their latest call for a revamp of the licencing laws comes in the wake of complaints that customers could not watch the Michelle Smith on TV in their locals.

The same crux arose two years ago during the World Cup '94 but no moves were made since to rectify the position.

According to a spokesman for the Mayo Vintners Federation of Ireland they want the abolition of Sunday afternoon closing, an extension of trading hours on bank holidays and weekends, New Year's Eve and St. Patrick's Day and an increase in the number of exemptions for special events.

GERRY TOPS IN TROUT TEST

Gerry Tierney from Castlebar was the winner of the top prize of the Moran Cup at the annual Lough Carra Trout Anglers competition on Sunday with the heaviest fish for 3 lbs - 10 ozs. The second prize of the Bacon Company cup went to Brendan Hamrock, Castlebar who had the heaviest bay with three fish for 6 lbs - 6 ozs.

In third position was Phil Beirne, Castlebar who had three trout for 5 lbs- 15 ozs while Dick Duncalf, Ross, Castlebar was fourth with a trout for 1 lb - 13 ozs.

Some 36 anglers competed and nine fish for a total weight of 19 lbs - 2 ozs were caught for the day.

BRIAN'S GOLFING SUCCESS

Brian Cosgrove (15) son of Richard and Evelyn Cosgrove from Bangor Erris won the golf Captain's prize at Belmullet on Sunday. He is the youngest player ever to win the event.

WATER SAFETY COURSES

The national safety Council will stage water safety courses at the following locations in Mayo from August 5 to 10: Rinroe (Carratigue), Claremorris, Clare island, Keel and Aughleam.

ACHILL EXHIBITION

The Dutch Ambassador to Ireland Mr. A. Hermans will officially open a photographic exhibition "Achill by numbers - A first selection", by Willem Vermaase at Abha Teangaí, Dooagh, Achill on Sunday at 3p.m. where it will run until the end of August..

CAT SCAN CEILI

A total of £285 was raised by the Taugheen Ceili committee in aid of the CAT Scan appeal from a recent Ceili in Taugheen Hall. The organisers wish to thank all who supported the event.

Meanwhile Western Alzheimers wish to thank all those who supported the coffee morning in Taugheen which raised £62.

MOY HARBOUR GRANT

Government Chief Whip Jim Higgins has welcomed the allocation of £5,000 to the River Moy Harbour Commissioners. The allocation comes following the visit recently to the port by officials from the Commercial Harbours Division.

GORTJORDAN SCHOOL CELEBRATIONS

GORTJORDAN N.S., Kilmaine, celebrate their 100th anniversary this year. Celebrations have been going on for some time now and on Sunday next, to commemorate their centenary, a Heritage Day will be held in Gortjordan.

The official opening at 2 p.m. will be held by the Minister for Tourism and Trade, Enda Kenny.

There will be an Open Air Ceilí with Pat Friel and his band and Mid West Radio will also be in attendance where a heat of Ireland's Original Culchie will be contested.

BRAD PITT AT ASHFORD CASTLE

HOLLYWOOD heart-throb Brad Pitt, who has received critical acclaim in his latest blockbuster movie 'Seven', enjoyed the aristocratic luxury of Ashford Castle, Cong for two nights last week.

Pitt, who also starred in "Interview with a Vampire" spent the short sojourn in the West with his parents and was also accompanied by four armed bodyguards.

Chatting casually with staff and locals, he said that he was very impressed with Ireland, it's beauty and serenity and hoped that he would return here in the near future.

WESTPORT LAKE OPENING

Mr. Pat O'Hora, assistant manager, Employment services, FAS will officially open Kinlooey Lough at Deerpark, Aughagower, Westport on Friday.

Angling facilities including boat quay, car parking, access and sign-posting have been provided with assistance from FAS for the project which was organised by the Western regional Fisheries Board.
