ACTION PLAN FOR WESTPORT
By DEIRDRE KELLY
A DRAFT PLAN has been published to enable Westport capitalise on the town's "unprecedented growth".The blueprint has been presented to members of the local Urban Council for consideration and the drawing up of submissions on the proposals.
The document recommends the construction of two new road networks linking the Castlebar Road with Newport Road and Westport Quay, a move which would greatly relieve the major traffic congestion in the town centre. It is proposed that a major tree planting scheme be undertaken on Shop Street, Mill Street, James Street and Bridge Street as well as the development of the Clocktower.
The authors suggest that expansion of the town be confined to certain locations but one of the major improvements is earmarked for Westport Quay. The report states: "The potential for the development of Westport Quay as a focus for water based recreation is enormous."
It suggests the erection of a two-storey marina building and facilities for water sports such as windsurfing, water skiing and dingy sailing. Also provided would be jetties with mooring for 28 small craft, boat repair yard and slipway and adequate parking and the further development of the Pond area.
The importance of the Westport House Demesne is also stressed where the development of camping and caravanning accommodation and other facilities can be undertaken while ensuring the historical integrity and character of the estate is protected.
In the proposal for the greening of the streets the report suggests the provision of town pavements incorporating tree lines on one or both sides of each street. A multi-storey car park is also planned for Mill Street on property owned by Westport UDC.
Council officials stress that the "Westport Plan 2,000 - an integrated action plan for Westport" is a draft document and subject to discussion before any part of it is adopted.
Members of the authority will discuss the plan in September after which a
public meeting will be held to discuss the proposals.
