BELCARRA SCHOOLGIRL IS LAID TO REST

The young girl who died while on a school outing to Castlebar Swimming Pool on Monday will be buried today (Wednesday).

Karina Moran (12), from Ballinafad, Belcarra, became ill while in the pool with her classmates from Belcarra national school.

She was taken to the nearby Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar where she died sometime later.

It was the school's final trip to the pool this term. A post mortem examination was held on the deceased in a Galway hospital yesterday, the results of which have not been made public.

There were harrowing scenes in Balla last night as her remains were removed to St. Ann's Church, Belcarra. Many of her 5th class friends were unable to hold back the tears and wept openly.

Neighbours and friends comforted her parents Tony and Rose Moran and her older sister Vivienne who is aged 16 years.

Karina will be buried in Guesdian cemetery after Mass at noon today (Wednesday).

MARY TAKES THE CHAIR

Mrs. Mary Murphy, Westport has been elected as county chairperson of the Mayo Rehab branch, a post she will hold for two years.

Mary, is wife of Dr. Brendan Murphy, and has been involved with Rehab for over fifteen years. Both Mary and Brendan have been former chairpersons of the Westport Rehab branch.

Mary replaces Mr. Paddy Cannon who held the post for the past two years.

BERTIE ON TOUR

Fianna Fail leader Bertie Ahern will embark on a whistle-stop tour of Mayo on Friday. At 10a.m. he will visit Charlestown and 45 minutes later he will be at the Belmont Hotel, knock.

At 11.45 a.m. Mr. Ahern will arrive at the Vankenburg Hotel, Ballinrobe and he will stop off at Claremorris at 1 pm

He will be at the Square, Balla at 2 pm, arriving at Straide at 2.45 pm he will travel to Foxford for 3 pm vis Ballyvary and he will be in Ballina at 3.30 pm

At 6.30 pm Mr. Ahern will arrive at Crossmolina and he will be in Bangor at 7.30 pm and in Belmullet at 8 pm

At 9.30 pm he will arrive at Ballycastle and at 10 pm in Killala and at 10.30 pm he will attend a function in the Deanwood, Ballina.

KEEP IT CLEAN

The adjudicators for the National Tidy Town's Competition are expected to visit Castlebar this week, according to informed sources.

It is vital, therefore, that the town be presented at its best so that the efforts of the Keep Castlebar Tidy Campaign committee will pay off when the results are announced.

"QUIET MAN" HERITAGE CENTRE

Trade and Tourism Minister Enda Kenny will officially open the £250,000 "Quiet Man" heritage centre at Cong on Saturday afternoon.

To coincide with the event the "Quiet Man" entertainer Stephen Murphy will launch his new tape "The Quiet Man plays his favourite tunes on the accordion" in the heritage centre.

CHARITY WALKS CLASH

The Irish Guide Dog walk which to take place on Sunday has been postponed until June 23 due to the clash with the Cheshire Home fund raising walk in Castlebar on Sunday. The Guide Walkers will gather at Market Square on Sunday week at 3 pm while the Cheshire Home family walkers will meet at McHale Park at 2 pm and proceed to the Mall where there will be entertainment laid on.
