Tour of Ireland

Fr. Tom Kelly, a native of Kilmaine, and son of Pete and Mary Anne Kelly, Knocknageehe, is currently on a tour of Ireland with 38 of his parishioners from Birmingham, Alabama, U.S.A.

On Tuesday, Fr. Kelly celebrated mass in Gortjordan church, the church where he was ordained, for locals at which the visiting party were guests of honour.

They then visited Gortjordan National School, which of course this year celebrates it's Centenary. The visitors looked around the school and its surrounds and talked to the pupils.

It is the very first time that Fr. Kelly's parishioners have visited Ireland. Their tour has already taken in Dublin and Westport (during which they climbed Croagh Patrick) and is set to take in Connemara, Galway and Clonmacnoise, all going well.

Opening of stand

It was a gala affair in the Community Grounds, Kilmaine on Sunday afternoon last, when the new stand was officially opened by the President of the Connaught Council, P.J. McGrath.

When the Community Grounds were opened in May of 1987, Mayo played Clare in a Senior football challenge. Over nine years later, with the grounds now complemented by a fine stand, the two teams met again.

The game itself did not quite live up to expectations, but at least the result was right - Mayo prevailing after a titanic struggle by a goal 1-12 to 0-12. If the game was a dampener, it was the only low point on a day which started extremely well for Kilmaine G.A.A.

With the Intermediate team currently going through a rebuilding process under the watchful eyes of Michael John Mullin and Bill Loughlin, a draw with Headford in a challenge, which got underway at 2.00, was highly encouraging. A final score of Kilmaine 2-4 Headford 1-7 getting proceedings underway in style.

Between games, the opening of the stand took place. The Chairman of the Kilmaine G.A.A. Club, Patsy Shaughnessy, the driving force behind this project, addressed the large crowd which had gathered.

He welcomed all who attended including officials from the Mayo County Board, representatives from Clare County Board, Fr. James Carter and P.J. McGrath.

Patsy gave a brief outline into the work involved in constructing the stand and thanked all those who gave time and energy to the cause. The finance was raised through the selling of advertisement boards and all those businesses in the locality who bought such advertisement have also to be complemented.

The Chairman expressed his delight at the present state of the Kilmaine G.A.A. Club, especially with the current Underage organisation that was in place.

He had a bone to pick with the County Bord na nīg though. Patsy said that the structure of the Bord na nīg was crippling small rural clubs like Kilmaine. Kilmaine were forced to travel great distances to fulfill underage League fixtures and all this accumulated enormous travel expenses.

Fr. James Carter, Parish Priest of Kilmaine, then blessed the stand. President of the Connaught Council, P.J. McGrath, officially opened the stand and praised the work and modesty of Patsy Shaughnessy.

He added that Sunday's game was a welcome opportunity for both Mayo and Clare to flex their muscles before the Championship. He hoped that both teams would meet on August 11th in the All-semi-final. P.J. concluded by saying what a great day this was for the village of Kilmaine and how Kilmaine deserved its day in the sun.

Fr. Noel Forde, Chairman of the County Board, congratulated the Kilmaine G.A.A. Club on their achievement and expected a competitive game between the two counties.

Fr. Noel was correct to a degree, it was a competitive game, but to be honest, not really a good one.

A David Nestor goal was the highlight of the first half, after which Mayo went into the break one point ahead, 1-4 to 0-6.

The second period was a major disappointment and only late points by Diarmuid Byrne, James Horan and Maurice Sheridan, secured a win for Mayo. A full report from G.A.A. reporter John Melvin can be found in the Sports pages.

GAA Lotto

The all new Shrule/Glencorrib Lotto produced the following winners last weekend. Helen Traynor c/o Gibbons' Shrule, Mary Walsh Brodella, Jarlath Prendergast c/o NCF Claremorris and Stephanie Heneghan c/o Anglers Rest Headford all are the recipients of a £10 note.

The next draw takes place in McGraths of Shrule on the 16th of June and Oliver Lynskey, Kildunne, The Neale , will spin the wheel.

Gallant display by U-15 Girls

Shrule were beaten 2-0 by Kiltane in the Community Games Under-15 Soccer final, held in Celtic Park, Castlebar on Wednesday last.

It was a brave performance by our girls, who despite being over powered physically by their opponents, never gave in, and right up to the final whistle Kiltane were made work for their victory.

At half-time, Shrule were two goals down, and faced with a stiff breeze in the second half they could have been slaughtered.

However the determination that the side showed in earlier rounds surfaced once again, and come 1997 this young team will surely be there or thereabouts again.

The panel: Denise Biggins, Helena Lohan (capt.), Miriam Kennedy, Concepta Bohan, Laura Murphy, Linda Geraghty, Niamh Hennelly, Assumpta Bohan, Patricia Sheridan, Sabrina Bailey, Breda Flaherty, Helen Flaherty, Michelle Biggins, Jackie Biggins, Anna Metajder and Sarah Sheridan.

Under-10's reach County semi

In the Community Games Boys Under-10 Competition, Shrule advanced to the semi-final stage, courtesy of a four point win over Carra. The final score was Shrule 6-5 Carra 5-4. The Shrule scorers were: Gary Mullin (1-0), Kevin Staunton (2-0) & Mark Ronaldson (3-5).

Connaught Track & Field Championships

There was further success for the Border Ramblers Athletic club last weekend, when they captured 4 gold, a silver and a bronze, at the Connaught Track & Field Championships held in Dangan, Galway.

Helena Lohan in the Shot Putt, Assumpta Bohan in the 800 metres, Niamh Hennelly in the 1500 metres and Patrick Moran in the Mens Senior Discus, provided the club with the golds.

David Mullin was second in the Long jump and third in the 80 metres sprint.

There were also many hard luck stories. Dermot Geraghty missed out narrowly on a bronze, being beaten into fourth place in the 1500 metres, a position occupied also by the U13 Girls and Boys teams.

The Girls U-13 Relay team consisted of Helena Lohan, Sabrina Bailey, Geraldine Caokley and Assumpta Boahn while running for the Boys were Dermot Geraghty, Pat Casey, David Geraghty and David Mullin.
