MWR Junior Sports Reporter
Scoops Snickers Award
Fifteen year old Spurs fan Daniel Carey from Ballycurrin, Headford and a past pupil of Gortjordan National School is at present sitting his Junior Cert. However, he has reason to celebrate as he has won a major National prize for Radio Reporting in the form of the Snickers Fair Play Reporter of the Year Competition - Radio Section.
This was a competition run by the snack company Snickers and the Irish Independent. Daniel emerged victorious over a group of five finalists from all over the country, including another Mid West Radio Junior Sports Reporter, Jonathan Mullin from Kilmaine.
Daniel and Jonathan both work weekends at the MWR Sports Department. They first started visiting the studios back in the Summer of 1994 under the watchful eye of former MWR fm Sport and Western People Reporter Liam Horan (Liam has since moved on to The Irish Independent).
Once a finalist, Daniel had to travel to the Ireland V Portugal match in Dublin and do a three/four minute report of the game by 12 noon the following day.
Daniel was one of the youngest participants in the competition as most of the other young people were 5th year students.
In the future Daniel says "I would like to get into journalism when I leave school. I hope to take a course in Rathmines or DCU once I complete my Leaving Cert".
For his trouble Daniel will receive a trip to the Euro '96 semi-final in
Wembley on 26th June.
