WIND POWER IN BELMULLET

A wind powered recreation centre is to be built in the Mayo Gaeltacht.

A planning application for the development which will include a 25 metre swimming pool has been made to Mayo County Council by Ciunas Limited with an address at 32 Westland Square, Pearse street, Dublin.

The developers plan to erect four 6.5 metre high wind turbines beside the centre at the Industrial Estate in Belmullet.

TRAFFIC LIGHT CHANGE

Mayo County Council have installed a new set of traffic lights at the Kingsbridge corner in Castlebar.

As a result Lucan Street becomes a two-way street. A mini roundabout has been installed on the Charles Street/Lucan Street/Richard Street junction.

Traffic on all approaches must yield before entering the roundabout and Rush Street is now one-way northwards.

COUNCIL - ALL AT SEA

Deputy Michael Ring has suggested that a meeting of Westport Urban Council should be held on board the new £500,000 ferry "The Pirate Queen" which has just been launched to operate between Westport and Clare Island.

The facility, he said, should be experienced by the members and officials and what better way to do so but by having a council meeting on the vessel.

CASTLEBAR CARNIVAL

Murray's Amusements are now at Hoban's Car Park as part of the annual Castlebar Boxing Club promotion.

The Northern Ireland family have ben coming to the county town for the past thirty years and the 1996 visit see an even greater array of attractions including the spectacular spaceship Cosmos.

CLONBUR FLYING PIG FESTIVAL

Details of the Clonbur "96 Flying Pig Festival will be announced at a press conference at the Fair Hill House, Clonbur on Monday July 8.

The Joyce Country festival will run from August 9 to 11 and is being promoted by the Clonbur Community Council.

116 COMPLAINTS TO OMBUDSMAN

A total of 116 complaints were invested by the Ombudsman Kevin Murphy in Mayo during 1995. Twenty-one other matters were referred to him but were outside his jurisdiction.

The greatest number concerned the Civil Service and the following is the breakdown: Social Welfare 48; Revenue Commissioners 1; Environment 2; Agriculture 12; Education 5; Other 6; Local Authorities 16; Health Boards 14; Telecom Eireann 8 and An Post 4.

Of these 92 were finalised of which complaints resolved were 20, assistance was provided in another 20 while 35 were not upheld and 17 others were discontinued or withdrawn.

CLAREMORRIS SUMMER ARTS

The George Moore Society will announce details of its Summer Arts Festival "Horses and Horseman" in the Oak Room of the Mansion House, Dublin on Friday afternoon.
