A dispute which threatened the future of Ballyhaunis Boxing Club is close to a settlement. Members of the Mayo Boxing Board have made major inroads in bringing the six-month old conflict to a satisfactory conclusion. They have succeeded in securing the return of the equipment owned by the club.

The equipment is now in possession of a leading member of the board, and it is expected to be handed over to officials of the Ballyhaunis club in the coming days.

It is hoped the club will be allowed to return to their old training facilities in the town before the start of the new season.

The rumpus blew up between club officials over the appointment of a coach from outside the area and culminated in allegations that a weigh-reducing tablet was subscribed to a boxer before a national championship bout.

The future of the Ballyhaunis B.C. has been put seriously at risk by the lingering conflict.

A spokesman for the Mayo Boxing Board said he was delighted a significant breakthrough had been made in the issue.

"Many long hours have been put into bringing both sides in the dispute together, and I thank everybody concerned. We hope that the sport in the town of Ballyhaunis can start afresh from the start of next season. At the end of the day, boxing should supersede all other concerns," he added.
