DIXIE THE COW MAKES IT FIVE IN A ROW!
By Michael Commins
"Dixie", the wonder cow, continues on her happy way! She duly delivered her fifth set of twins in a row on the 20th February. Now, farmer Tom O'Brien from Cloonmore, Claremorris, is wondering is there any cow in Ireland with such an outstanding record.
Eight year old "Dixie" has given birth to eleven calves. She herself arrived in this world on Tom's farm, three miles from Kiltimagh, in April 1988.
She had her first calf on the 28th April, 1991. The first set of twins arrived on the 19th March, 1992. This magnificent feat was repeated faithfully on the 10th March, 1993, the 9th March, 1994, the 6th March, 1995, and now on the 20th February, 1996.
Once again, the "Pa" was Eddie Coleman's bull "Billy" who has grazed on the green pastures of Shanahy, Bohola, for a number of years.
Says Tom O'Brien: "I was naturally delighted when I went out and found two lovely black heifer calves. All are doing fine. She's a great cow, one of the very best."
"Billy", the "gentleman", is a Pedigree Aberdeen Angus Bull and he was bought by Eddie Coleman in Carrick-on-Shannon a few years ago.
And "Billy" is a bit of a character himself from all reports!
Meanwhile, it is highly likely that this "Dixie Darlin" from Cloonmore has
made it into the record books. No wonder Tom feels like singing "There'll be
days like this"!
