The sudden death of retired Gda. Sgt. Noel Lynn stunned the Loughglynn, Lisacul, and Gorthaganny areas. Noel, aged 54, retired from the Garda Siochana last Summer. He took ill in Ballaghaderreen last week and died a short time later.Noel, a native of Lahardane near Crossmolina, came to the area in 1978. He soon became immersed in various aspects of community life and from the outset was a great favourite with the people of the district.
Noel was at all times a man of commonsense who brought a social mission to his role as garda and sergeant. He developed a great relationship with the people in his community and was always available to lend help and assistance when the need arose.
He was closely associated with the local Eire Og G.A.A. Club and was very much involved with the development of the club in its many and varied outlets. Sport was close to his heart and he always enjoyed the friendly banter when Mayo and Roscommon were in championship action.
Even since his retirement, Noel continued to show his caring and gentle nature by visiting the elderly and those living alone in the district. He was a great man for keeping in touch with the people and reassuring them of the care and concern of the wider community for the wellbeing of the entire community.
During his years in this region, he gave loyal and dedicated service to the people of Loughglynn, Lisacul, and Gorthaganny. He and his family were held in the highest regard by all in the neighbourhood.
Noel's sudden death brought great sadness to the district and there was a general outpouring of community sadness and grief as the news spread around the area. He was man of noble character and virtue who was a credit to his profession and who will be greatly missed by his beloved family and legion of friends. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
The large and representative attendances at the funeral ceremonies reflected the esteem in which he was held by so many and the depth of sorrow being experienced by the community at the untimely passing of a dear and close friend. Removal was from Kilgarriff's Funeral Home, Ballaghaderreen, to the Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel, Loughglynn. Canon John O'Rourke, P.P., delivered an eloquent homily during the con-celebrated Requiem Mass. Interment took place in Cuiltyboe Cemetery. Guards of Honour were formed by his colleagues in the Garda Siochana and members of the Eire Og G.A.A. Club. He is deeply regretted by his wife Helen, sons Hugh, Sean, Kevin, Brian, and Kieran, brothers Sean and Val, nieces, nephews, mother-in-law, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, relatives and many friends.
