Attempts to dismantle the Mayo television deflector system must be resisted, says Deputy Seamus Hughes, following a controversy over the community deflector system in Ballyhaunis.

Horizon T.V. Distribution Ltd, have responded to the remarks made by Deputy Seamus Hughes regarding illegal deflectors operating in its licensed franchised areas.

Mr John Sheridan, general manager at Horizon, said that the company operates within the law and has requested the Government to abide by its commitments so that a full multichannel service can be transmitted to areas covered by their licence.

The company operates in Mayo, Roscommon, Galway and Kerry.

'Horizon Multichannel pays copyright and performing rights to the BBC and the originators of material broadcast on these channels' said Mr Sheridan.

'The illegal deflectors do not pay any of these fees at present,' he added.

Mr Sheridan said the company will continue to provide an excellent service for its Mayo customers and to expand the service in the future.
