SUDDEN DEATH OF WESTPORT SERGEANT
The sudden death has taken place of Westport based Sergeant Jack Healy of Maryland, Castlebar.Aged 48-years Sergeant Healy was born in Wexford and later moved to Wicklow where his father, a native of North Mayo, was a forester. After joining the Garda Siochana in 1968, he first worked in the plain clothes division in Dublin before moving to Kilmaine as a Garda. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in the mid 1980's when he was transferred to Louisburgh.
Six years ago he was moved to Westport as station sergeant where he replaced Sergeant John Meehan on his retirement. A keen golfer, Jack Healy was a member of the Castlebar Golf Club and he had played with Garda colleagues on Sunday. He represented the Castlebar club on a number of occasions in the Cecil Ewing Shield.
He was deeply involved in the GAA, having a special love for Bord na nOg in Castlebar. He devoted many hours of his leisure time the organisation to which he was treasurer for a period.
An outstanding policeman, Jack, was a dedicated officer but always courteous and considerate to the public.
He is survived by his wife Elaine and sons Peter and Brian, sister Brenda, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, father-in-law, nephews and nieces to whom deepest sympathy is extended on their great and sudden loss.
DISABILITY COUNCIL NOMINATION
Mary Healy of Gortnasellagh, Swinford has been nominated as a candidate to contest the forthcoming election to the Council for the Status of People with Disabilities on the interim council for Mayo.Mary has been deeply involved with the Arthritis Foundation and is seeking the opportunity to bring these problems to a national forum.
PRESENTATION TO CHIEF SUPT.
Presentations were made to Chief Supt. Padraig Tansey at a function at the weekend to mark his transfer to Mullingar from Castlebar where he had been stationed since holding the rank of Inspector.NEW COUNCIL CHAIRMAN
The annual general meeting of Mayo County Council will be held in the council chamber in Castlebar on Monday July 22 when a new chairman will be elected for the coming year. He/she will replace Mr. John Martin Flannery who has held the prestigious post for the past twelve months.HUGE TROUT CAUGHT ON MASK
Longford Angler Sean Kenny landed three specimen trout on Lough Mask -- in the one day.The fish which tipped the scales at almost 36 pounds have been sent to the Irish Specimen Fish Committee for ratification.
For the record, Sean from Teffia Park, caught them on a rapala bait and
they weighed in at 12 lb - 1 oz., 11 lb - 14.5ozs and 11 lb - 5.5oz.
