Farming in a sorry mess!
WHAT A sorry mess farming is in. Mad cow disease has been blown out of all proportions with self-styled experts, with little knowledge of the disease, making rash statements about the dangers of eating beef. Irish beef is the best in the world and is completely safe for the consumer. Animals must now have three tags. This was to come into force some weeks ago, but the majority of farmers still await delivery of the tags.
This week the Department of Agriculture ordered that farmers cannot submit their headage or special beef premium forms until they engage a veterinary surgeon to tag their calves.
What is wrong with the Irish Farmers Association, the body chosen to represent the farmers?
And the farmers themselves . . . they should be asking their public representatives to get Minister Ivan Yates to sort out those pressing problems immediately. Untold damage is being done to this little nation of ours. And nobody seems to care. Agriculture is still our major money maker and creates thousand of jobs in spin-off industries.
It's time the bureacrats were put in their place and told to get off the backs of farmers. Most of them wouldn't know a friesian from a frying pan! The voice of the farmer must be heard loud and clear. And the message must be hammered home that they have taken enough. Especially the small farmers in the West of Ireland.
Action speaks louder than words!
