HUAGHEY TO UNVEIL HORAN BUST

FORMER Taoiseach Charles Haughey will unveil a bust of "Miracle Priest" the late Monsignor James Horan, the founder of Knock Airport at a ceremony at the base on May 30.

It will be ten years to the day that Mr. Haughey officially opened the Airport which was the brainchild of Monsignor Horan.

Celebrations on the Thursday will include a flying salute from the Aer Corps and a musical recital by the Army Band of the Western Command.

The following day (Friday May 31) the Monsignor Horan commemorative Mass at Knock Basilica will be held when the chief celebrant will be Archbishop Michael Neary.

Later EU Commissioner Padraig Flynn will lay a wreath at the tomb of Monsignor Horan which will be followed by a reception in the Belmont Hotel, Knock.

On Saturday at 11a.m. Tourism and Trade Minister Enda Kenny will formally launch the Monsignor Horan International Air Rally in conjunction with the Connaught Aero Club.

Flying clubs from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales will participate. Later that evening (8p.m.) there will be a celebration Ryanair flight with the proceeds going to Western charities. A half hour later Minister Kenny will present the trophies to the air rally winners and this will be followed by a social evening in the Airport Observation Lounge.

Meanwhile a marketing grant of £250,000 has been approved by the Cabinet for the development of Knock Airport.

Trade and Tourism Minister Enda Kenny said the cash would be made available over a four year period. The details of of the allocation were being worked out with the Knock Airport Board.

IRELAND WEST BROCHURES

Tourism Minister Enda Kenny will officially launch Ireland West Tourism's "The Magic of Ireland West", "West of Ireland Holiday Breaks 1996" and "Where to stay 1996" at a reception in the Downhill Hotel, Ballina on Friday at 3p.m.

GHILLIE COURSE

A one week ghillie course will be held at the salmon Research Agency at Furnace, Newport from May 27 to 31. Anyone interested should contact the fishery manager at 098-41107

TOURMAKEADY STIGMATA

Connaught Telegraph columnist, author and playwright Fr. Pádraig Standún's work "Stigmata" will be performed in Tourmakeady Hall on Friday at 8.30p.m. This highly acclaimed version in Irish is being presented by Taibhddhearc na Gaillimhe. See Standún's Station page 2.

ARTHRITIS MEETING

Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon, Mr. Michael O'Sullivan will be the guest speaker at an Arthritis public information meeting at the Travellers Friend Hotel, Castlebar tonight (Wednesday) commencing at 8.30p.m.

TOURISM COUNCIL MEMBER

Eileen Gavin, Belcarra, Castlebar has been appointed by the Minister for Tourism Enda Kenny as a members of the twenty-six member new Tourism Council, the representative body of the tourism industry. Eileen (nee Hoban) is catering executive with the Rehab Workshop in Castlebar and was previously a hotel manageress at several leading hotels around the country. The appointment is for a two year period.
