FOOTBALL SUPREMO, SEAMUS DALY DIES

THE death has taken place of Mr. Seamus Daly of Mulranny, one of the country's best known GAA personalities.

Aged 77-years, Mr. Daly a native of Castlebar, had an association with the GAA for a sixty year period and he trained the Mayo Senior team over three decades.

He won six Mayo senior championship medals with Castlebar Mitchels in the 1960's.

A publican and businessman, Mr. Daly was also a keen golfer and angler. He was grandson of James Daly, former editor of the Connaught Telegraph and co-founder of the Land League with Michael Davitt.

He was buried yesterday (Tuesday) in Mulranny. He is survived by his wife Mary, sons John and James and daughter Marie.

MAYO PESCA GRANTS

A total of £411,275 is to be spent in Co. Mayo on two projects under the new EU PESCA initiative. Of that £205,638 will be funded by EU grants and £20,564 by national grants.

The two projects approved are £209,715 for Killary Salmon Ltd for the provision of a waterbus for cruises and sightseeing trips in Killary Harbour and £16,487 to James Corrigan, Achill island for the establishment of a dive school.

The allocation of both grants have been welcomed by Trade and Tourism Minister Enda Kenny and Deputy Michael Ring.

WRITING EXPERT

Martin Munnelly, Richmond national school, Crossmolina was the national winner in the infants category of the INTO/EBS handwriting competition 1996.

AIRPORT DOCUMENTARY

"The airport that was predicted to go into a nosedive is climbing now and the sky is the limit", said Archbishop Joseph Cassidy in an MWR documentary on Knock Airport, which will be broadcast on the afternoon of July 30.

Other contributors will include former Transport Minister Jim Mitchell, Fr. Michael McGreil, a close friend of the late Monsignor James Horan; EU Commissioner Padraig Flynn, Deputy P.J. Morley, Government Chief Whip Jim Higgins, Tourism and Trade Minister Enda Kenny; Monsignor Dominic Grealy, Airport board chairman Cathal Duffy and Frank Harrington whose construction team built the facility in record time.

The 55-minute entitled "Who Said Elephants Can't Fly" celebrated the success, against the odds of Knock Airport, celebrating its tenth anniversary this week.

NEW PRINCIPAL

Mr Sean McLoughlin of Callow, Foxford has been appointed principal of St. Joseph's secondary school, Foxford. He replaces the late Mr. Bertie Towey.

ISLAND DEATH

The death has taken place of Mrs. Mary O'Halloran of Westquarter, Inishbofin Island. The deceased was mother of Mary Catherine Heanue, the Harbour Inishturk, and a leading member of the island community council. She is also survived by her sons Martin and Michael Joe and daughters Ann, Alice and Bridget to whom deepest sympathy is tendered on their great loss.

GARDA OPEN EVENIN

G The Garda Divisional headquarters in Castlebar, just opened by the Minister for Justice Nora Owen, will be open to the public on Friday evening from 5 - 8p.m. Members of the public are invited to guided tours of the complex, one of the most modern in the country. Light refreshments will be served.

BALLING CRASH VICTIMS LAID TO REST

There were harrowing scenes at the funerals of the two young crash victims in Ballina and Corballa.

Eighteen year-old Maurice McDonagh of Creggs Road, Ballina and Karen Healy (17) of Corballa PO died in a horrific crash while travelling from a pre-graduation function in Ballina.

TIDY TOWNS DRIVE

The Tidy Towns drive in Castlebar is in full swing with almost 50 members of the public assisting in a major clean up.

Now the organisers have called on householders and business people to have their premises painted during the month of June in advance of the adjudication.

DEATH OF MR KER GAVIN

The death took place yesterday of Mr. Ker Gavin, Lucan Street, Castlebar after a prolonged illness.

Aged 62-years the deceased was father of Mr. Blackie (Kieran) Gavin, a member of Castlebar urban Council.

A former employee of the Western Health Board the late Mr. Gavin was one of nature's gentlemen and was well known and highly respected throughout the region.

He is survived by his wife Dot, sons Pat, Kieran, John, Noel and Paul and daughter Mary to whom sympathy is extended. Full obituary next week.

WESTPORT HOUSE OPENS

Westport House and Children's Zoo re-opens on Friday for the summer season.

All attractions at the facility will operate over the holiday weekend. Season tickets are now available at reduced rates.
