Hospital Design Team Appointed

The design team has been selected by the Western Health Board to proceed with the construction of the £25m extension to the Mayo General Hospital.

It consists of an architect, mechanical and electrical engineers, civil and structural engineers and a quantity surveyor.

The negotiation of the fees for the project will take place tomorrow (Thursday) after which the names of the various design team members will be announced.

A letter will then be dispatched to the Department of Health seeking formal approval for the project.

According to Trade and Tourism Minister Enda Kenny there will be no delay in this regard as Department officials had been involved on the interview board and will be the negotiation procedure.

Minister Kenny said: "No delays are anticipated. Once formal approval is received work will commence within the original time scale. I am delighted the phase two development is going according to plan."

This means that work on the extension can proceed early next year. The provision of the facility will take place over a four year period.

It will include an orthopaedic unit capable of carrying out 1,000 operations each year, as well as assessing 1,400 new patients annually at out patient departments.

A new administration and medical records department is being included in the overall design. It will also consist of a new accident and emergency department, ten isolation rooms, a ten bed special care baby unit and over 70 extra in-patient beds.
