BURRISCARRA BRONZE AGE FIND HONOURED BY AN TAISCE
The Doon promontory fort and nature trail at Burriscarra, Claremorris is one of fourteen projects nationwide which has been honoured by Am Taisce, The National Trust for Ireland.The award was given for private initiative in exposing and revealing a large Bronze Age fortified lakeshore village on the shores of Lough Carra, one of the largest identified sites of its type in Ireland and its interpretation for visitors achieved by minimum intrusion and sensitive signposting.
The awards mark the 50th anniversary of An Taisce and they were presented at a reception in Dublin by President Mary Robinson.
COME FLY WITH ME
Mayo Flying Club will stage an open weekend at Castlebar Airport on Saturday and Sunday from 11a.m. to 7p.m. each day.Anyone who ever thought about flying an aeroplane or considered getting their Private Pilots Licence are invited to participate in the weekend.
Introductory flights will be available on both days and the minimum age for those who can avail of the flights is 16-years. And of course all flights are subject to weather conditions.
Over the years the popularity of flying has grown considerably thanks to the initiative of the Mayo Flying Club members.
NEW CASTLEBAR FILLING STATION
An independent company is set to open a new filling station in Castlebar. The development is set to take place at Newport Road in the old Hat factory building and promises cheaper fuel for motorists.GOLFING FOR CAT SCAN
A golf competition for teams of four will be staged at Westport Golf Club on October 12, the proceeds from which will go to the Cat Scan appeal for the Mayo General Hospital.It is open to ladies or gents and the entry fee per team is £100. SIX OF THE BEST FOR FRANK
Veteran Castlebar angler Frank Quinn from Springfield had a bumper day's fishing on the last day of the season on Monday.He caught six trout on Lough Carra for a total weight of 13 lbs - 12 ozs. The heaviest fish being 4.25 lbs while three of them weighed in at 3 lbs.
Frank was dapping grasshoppers, but a friend who accompanied him had no luck on the day.
FINTAN MURPHY IS NEW MAYO COUNTY REGISTRAR
SOLICITOR Mr. Fintan Murphy has been appointed Mayo County registrar by the Cabinet.He replaces Mr. Patsy Murphy (Ballinrobe) who has retired from the post after ten years.
Mr. Murphy, a native of The Green, Castlebar, who has been a member of the firm of Garavan O'Connor Solicitors, Main Street, Castlebar for the past fifteen years, takes up his new post o October 21.
The following day sittings of the Circuit Court commence in Castlebar. Mr. Murphy, who is a member of Castlebar Lions Club and brother of RTƒ newscaster Michael Murphy, is wished every success in his new position
MAYO OLYMPIC POOL BID
THE chairman of Mayo County Council Pat McHugh has backed calls for the construction of an Olympic size 50 metre pool following Michelle Smith's triple gold and bronze strike at the recent games in Atlanta.Speaking at a meeting of Mayo VEC, Mr. McHugh suggested the Committee should call on the government to construct a fifty metre pool.
"I'm not necessarily suggesting it should be in Claremorris," said Mr. McHugh, "but it should be made clear that such a pool need not necessarily be in Dublin."
TOURISM COUNCIL MEET IN BALLINTUBBER
THE Tourism Council which is chaired by Tourism and Trade Minister Enda Kenny, will on October 11, meet in Ballintubber Abbey which was founded in 1216 by the king of Connaught Cathal Crobhdearg O'Connor.The Council which is made up of a wide range of tourists interests from both the private and public sector, meets on a quarterly basis to discuss the issues currently affecting the industry.
The Council will attend a special lunch in Breaffy House Hotel, Castlebar before the Ballintubber Abbey meeting.
PEOPLE OF THE YEAR CLOSING DATE
The closing date for receipt of nominations for the "Mayo People of the Year" awards is Wednesday next October 9.Nine awards in all will be presented in November, two of which have ben reserved for Overseas recipients.
