Celebration of the Senses Festival

Connaught Telegraph 2 October 1996

Celebration of the Senses, Castlebar's multi-cultural international festival which takes place from October 25th to 28th, is set to reawaken people's sense of smell.

It will afford the public the opportunity to inhale the healing scents of aromatherapy oils, smell the varied aromas of international cuisine and ponder beautiful exotic plants.

The nose can detect far more different smells than ears can detect sounds. In fact the nose registers as many as ten thousand different types of smell sensations.

Our sense of smell fades and tires easily. That's why we need to take time to remind ourselves of the joys of having this marvellous, yet subtle sense.

To explore the sense of smell, the festival offers a number of events running throughout the weekend.

On Saturday, October 26th, as part of 'the touch extravaganza', why not try out the wide variety of essential oils on display. These oils, used as part of aromatherapy, have a number of uses from oil-burners to baths. Why not discover how to use oils to help relax a tired body or invigorate a tired mind. Make your bath time a time where you can relax and let your nose do the work.

On Sunday, October 27th, visit the Food Hall in the Town Hall, Castlebar. Experience the joys of trying out different styles of cookery and discovering the magic of a fresh range of new combinations of smells, tastes and textures.

Based on the cuisine of many different countries, exhibits in the food hall will draw on a wide variety of spices and flavours, some of which will be familiar, other less so.

If food is not your fancy and you and more the outdoor type, then come along to Horkan's Garden Centre on Sunday afternoon, October 27th. Whether you are the experienced gardener or one who couldn't tell a Biennial from an Annual, this experience of the exotic and the wild will be one not to be missed.

If you still have energy and are ready for more, simply stroll the streets and be entertained by the main street performers whose talents and entertainment will keep you smiling and soaking up the atmosphere for this spectacular occasion.
