Tender accepted for tertiary plant
Castlebar Urban Council have accepted a tender for the installation of a tertiary plant in the town, a meeting of the authority was told.Mr. John Condon, town clerk, said it was hoped the Department of the Environment could give its approval to the tender within the next month. Work would start as soon as the tender was approved and it was expected to take twelve weeks. Mr. Condon was responding to a question submitted by Mr. Johnny Mee.
Top gardeners are honoured
Castlebar Gardening Club have announced the prizewinners in their annual Condon Cup competition:- Best overall garden: Ann Maloney, Leiter.
- Best roses: Kitty Whyte, The Mall.
- Best Summer bedding: Julie Flannelly, Springfield.
- Best vegetables: Brenda Jackson, Derranadiva.
- Best law: John Mitchell.
- Best shrubs: Brendan Jackson.
- Best containers: Peter and Wyn Aldous.
- Best roses: Kitty Whyte, The Mall.
Prizes were sponsored by Matt Shaw, Horkan's Garden Centre, Castlebar Tool and Hire and Heitons.
Prize winners in the Shaw Silver Salver competition were: 1st, Debbie O'Malley; 2nd. John Mitchell; 3rd. Cathy Bohan.

Beverly moving back to town
Beverly Cooper Flynn, a Fianna Fail nominee to contest the next General Election in Mayo, is moving back to Castlebar.Beverly and his husband, John, have purchased a new home at Manor Village, Westport Road, Castlebar.
A member of Mayo County Council, she has opened a clinic in Castlebar and is shortly taking leave of absence from her work in Dublin.
Friends of Sacred Heart say thanks
The Friends of the Sacred Heart Hospital, Castlebar, have expressed thanks to all who supported the cabaret in the Welcome Inn Hotel, organised by Castlebar Rotary Club.Over £1,800 was raised in the venture and the committee is grateful to all those from around the country who attended the event. A special word of thanks goes to Henry McGlade, master of ceremonies, the Barney Set, all the artists, and the management of the Welcome Inn Hotel.
The Mayo G.A.A. Board generously presented a Hogan Stand ticket which was won in a raffle by Mrs. Kathleen McHale, Boradruma.
Mary Tunney of the Telephone Exchange won the prize of a pig in a draw organised by Chris O'Brien, while the second prize of a hamper went to Peter Hastings, Drumindoo, Westport.
Tributes has also been extended to the local Press and radio for their coverage of the event.

The Lay Readers at the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar, on Sunday next, October 20th, are as follows.- 10.00a.m.: Children's Mass.

Family Centre Programmes
PARENTING TEENS: These courses are for ordinary parents, including those who are single or separated as well as those who are happily married. Their principal aim is to help parents improve the way they communicate with their children, thus leading to winning their co-operation rather than forcing them to obey.Parents generally find these courses relaxing and enjoyable, have some good laughs and make new friends.
'Parenting Teens' is for parents of teenagers or those who are approaching their teen years and helps parents deal with the more difficult situations met in those years.
It begins on Wednesday, October 30th, in the Family Centre, Chapel Street, Castlebar, at 8.30p.m. There are six sessions in all.
THE FAMILY AND THE LAW: Family Law has undergone major changes in recent years. This course will introduce you to these changes and will deal with issues such as maintenance, family home, children, property succession, separation, divorce, Church annulment and State annulment.
It will be conducted by Catherine Killalea and Phil Armstrong of the Castlebar Law Centre, and Rev. P. Curran, Regional Tribunal, Galway.
It begins on Thursday, October 31st, from 8.30 to 10.00p.m., and continues over the following three Thursdays. For further information and booking, contact the Family Centre at 094- 25900.
College student numbers
The number of full-time students attention Mayo RTC in Castlebar in the current academic year is 352. There are a further 175 part-student students at the centre.
Education Minister, Niamh Bhreathnach, T.D., has informed Mr. Michael Ring, T.D. that a further 90 part-time students are expected to register for courses which start in January next.
