INISHTURK ISLAND MANAGER APPOINTED

Dubliner Dave Fitzgibbon has been appointed island manager with Inishturk Community Council and took up his post on Monday. Mr. Fitzgibbon will have the task of developing the resources on the island which is located nine miles off the mainland.

Council Adjourn Monthly Meeting

The October meeting of Mayo County Council was adjourned as a mark of respect to the late Mrs. Kathleen Burke, mother of Councillor Michael Burke, and the late Mr. Owen Roe O'Neill, Swinford, a former adult education officer with Mayo V.E.C.

Glowing tributes were paid to Mrs. Burke and Mr. O'Neill by members of the authority.

Mr. O'Neill, a native of Ballinrobe, died following a short illness. A teacher by profession, he was appointed Mayo adult education organiser in 1962.

The deceased was a member of the Mayo team which reached the All-Ireland senior football final in 1955, and subsequently served as a G.A.A. administrator.

He is survived by his wife, Marie, daughters, Niamh and Ciara, son, Niall, brother, sister, and other relatives, to whom sympathy is tendered.

Castlebar Chiropractic Clinic Opens

Dr. Charles Jenkins has opened the Castlebar Chiropractic Clinic at Knockaphunta, Westport Road in response to the large numbers of patients from the area who have been travelling to his Ballina Back Clinic for the past seven years.

Dr. Jenkins has a bachelors degree from Bethany College in Kansas and a doctor of Chiropractic degree from Sherman College, South Carolina.

Married to Letitia Hallinan from Foxford, Dr. Jenkins is certified in advanced Sacro-Occiptal Technique (SOT).

He practices SOT Technique and trained in Activator, Gonstead, Thompson, Pierce and Diversified Techniques.

His chiropractor clinic will be open in Castlebar on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2p.m. to 7p.m.

WORKERS SOUGHT FOR CHAMBER JOBS

Castlebar Chamber of Commerce are seeking workers to be employed on their year long Community Employment Project which will commence shortly.

Those applying must quialify under FAS regulations.

Of particular imterest to the Chambers would be those willing to become involved in research work as well as outdoor maintenance.

Those interested in the project should contact Maria Quinn at the Chamber of Commerce office at New Antrim Street, Castlenbar as soon as possible.

Chamber president Frank Greene said: "Anyone who meets the criteria and would be interested in such work should make comtact with our office as we are anxious to fill the numbers and get the scheme underway."

TURLOUGH CHURCH DEDICATION

The Bishop of Tuam, Killala and Achonry, Right Rev. John Neill will dedicate the new windows which have been installed at Christ Church, Turlough, Castlebar during a special service of Thanksgiving for harvest on Sunday November 3 at 3p.m.

All are welcome to join with rector Rev. Gary Hastings and his parishioners for refreshments following the service.

MAYO INTERNATIONAL FUND DRIVE

The first annual general meeting of the Muintir Mhaigh Eo International Fund was held in Castlebar when it was agreed that a major fund raising mission had to be undertaken if they were to achieve their target by World Convention time in Ballina in April next.

A number of delegates will travel to London in early December where Marcella Wilkinson of the Mayo Association Manchester is organising a special meeting of all UK Associations.

The officers elected for the coming year are: Chairman: Donal Downes (alway Association); vice-chairman: Paddy Moran (Dublin); secretary: Bernie O'Hara (Galway); Treasurer: Michael Garrett (Sligo); PRO: Noel Howley (Dublin).

Committee: Marcella Wilkinson (Manchester), Frank Walsh (Dublin), Julie McKeever (Australia), Padraic Peyton (Sligo), Frank Fullard (Castlebar) and Des Mahon (Castlebar).

CARING SEMINAR IN KNOCK

A half day seminar, entitled "Caring in the year 2000" will be held in St. John's Rest and care centre, Knock on Saturday.

It is being organised by the Voluntary Social Services Regional Group in conjunction with its annual general meeting .

The guest speaker will be Mr. Frank Goodwin, chairperson and a founder member of the Carers' Association.

His address will focus mainly on the care of older people and topics covered will include: caring in the home, Health Board strategy and the role of commercially based groups in the provision of services.

The aim of the seminar is to bring volunteers together in a atmosphere of mutual support.

The seminar is open to the public and registration will take place at 1.45p.m.

JAPANESE CULTURE

Pupils at St. Louis Community School, Kiltimagh are to commence studies on the land of the Rising Sun.

In a cultural exchange Ai Suzuki from Japan has joined the teaching staff and will give classes on Japanese culture.

REHAB ART EXHIBITIO

N An art exhibition entitles "Tranquillity" in aid of Rehab will be staged in Ashford Castle on Wednesday next (October 23) when paintings by leading Irish artists will be on display. These will include works by Doughlas Alexander, George Dunne, Frank Eggington, George Gillespie, Maurice Wilks, Peter and Graham Knuttle, Peter Collis, Markey Robinson and others.

There will also be a sculpture by Colm Brennan on display on the night.

Subscription is £10 and includes a cheese and wine reception.

FR. PAT ON RTE PHONE-IN

Fr. Pat O'Brien from Kiltimagh will present a new phone-in religious issues programme on RTE Radio in on Sunday evenings from 10.02 - 10.20p.m., commencing this Sunday.

Each week Fr. O'Brien and a studio panel will explore a religious theme. This week they will tackle the subject of alternative religions. The phone-in number (for the price of a local call) is 1850-85-77- 77.

From a literary background, Fr. O'Brien is a poet, the author of two books and a contributor to "The Furrow".

CCDA MEETING

The annual general meeting of the Castlebar Community Development Association will take place in the Imperial Hotel, Castlebar on Thursday October 31 at 8p.m.

PEOPLE OF THE YEAR ANNOUNCEMENTS

Details of who will receive the "Mayo People of the Year Awards" will be announced at a press conference in the Red Door Restaurant, Ballinrobe tomorrow (Thursday) night at 8p.m.

The event is organised annually by Rehab in conjunction with AIB Bank and the Connaught Telegraph.

In all nine awards will be presented at a gala function which will be staged in the Failte Suite of the Welcome Inn Hotel, Castlebar on Friday night November 15.

Two of these will be to overseas recipients, honouring emigrants who have excelled in the communities in their adopted lands.

Organising committee chairman, Tom Gillespie said: "The quality of nominations this year has been the highest to date. This in turn presented a headache for the panel of national adjudicators who had the task of sifting through them to select the final nine."

FATAL LOUISBURGH CRASH

A middle aged man was killed when the car in which he was a passenger went off the road near Louisburgh on Monday night.

He has been named as Austin Hester (55), a single man who lived alone at Tallaghbawn, Louisburgh.

The driver of the vehicle, John Giblin, of Roonagh Hill, Carrowniskey, Louisburgh is being treated at the Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar for injuries he received.

The accident happened at 12.50a.m. The car ended upside down in a drain. No other vehicle was involved
