A BRIDGE near Claremorris has been named in memory of Mayo County Council worker, Robert Brannick, who died tragically twelve years ago during road construction in the area. The chairman of the Council, local man Pat McHugh, unveiled a plaque on Castlemacgarrett Bridge on Sunday morning. The plaque and bridge were blessed by Fr. Des Fahy and members of Mr Brannick's family were present for the ceremony.

Mr McHugh said when he became chairman of Mayo County Council a few months he said to the County Manager, Mr Des Mahon and County secretary, Mr Padraig Hughes that there was one thing he wanted to do during his term of office and that was to unveil a plaque to the memory of Robert Brannick who was a much loved person in the area.

His life had been cut short in a tragic accident twelve years ago during the construction of the new road. It was appropriate that his memory would be enshrined in stone on the Castlemacgarrett Bridge. His name would be remembered in this area by countless generations for hundreds of years to come.

Mr Pat Curley, speaking on behalf of the Brannick family said the bridge was near where Robert Brannick lost his life and it would serve as a permanent reminder of the awful tragedy which struck him, his mother Delia and brother Sean on June 25, twelve years ago.

He thanked Mayo County Council for arranging this fine tribute to Robert.

Mr Curley said: "Robert was a special person whose personal qualities were widely appreciated. His outward interests in life were farming, football and music. "But his greatest quality and the one which for which he is most deeply remembered for was his deep and abiding concern for the wellbeing and the needs of his friends and immediate family."
