NEW COUNTY REGISTRAR
WELCOMED TO CIRCUIT COURT

Newly appointed Mayo County Registrar, Mr Fintan Murphy was formally welcomed when he attended his first sitting of the Circuit Court in Castlebar yesterday (Tuesday).

Judge Harvey Kenny welcomed Mr Murphy to his new post and said he had come with a proven track record. As a solicitor he had been courteous, efficient and displayed a friendly manner, qualities he would bring to his new position as County Registrar.

Mr Murphy, he said, had always shown common sense and had a very friendly disposition and he had no doubt but that he would do a great job in organising the affairs of the Circuit Court Office in Mayo.

Judge Kenny said Mr Murphy was taking up office at an historic time when he would oversee the opening of a new courthouse in Ballina nd the closing of the one in Castlebar.

"I can assure him of my assistance at all times", he concluded.

Mr Conor Fahy B.L. associated himself with the comments of Judge Kenny. He was delighted with the appointment as Mr Murphy had always go on well with members of the Bar.

"I congratulate him on his appointment and I know he will carry out his duties in a business-like manner.

State Solicitor, Mr Liam McHale said he could not have hoped for a finer colleague to get the post. He was looking forward to working with him and he pledged the support of his office and his personal support to Mr Murphy.

Not only would he have to contend with the day to day workings of the Circuit Court office, he would also be responsible for a forthcoming Referendum and for a General Election next year.

"It is a fairly tall order but it will fall on shoulders well capable of taking it.

Ms. Rose Mary Loftus Solicitor, on behalf of the Mayo Solicitors bar association associated herself with the remarks and said she was sure Mr Murphy would prove to be a capable and efficient County registrar. He had a superb track record. She knew he would fill the role well and she assured him of the full support of her members.

Supt. Tony McNamara joined in the good wished to Mr Murphy as assured him of the full co-operation of members of the Gardai.

Mr Colm Dunne of the Probation Service said he looked forward to working with Mr Murphy and wished him well in his new role.

In response, Mr Murphy thanked everyone for their kind words. He was taking up the position of County Registrar after eighteen year in practice in Castlebar.

He said: "My wish as County Registrar would be to maintain the high standards set by his predecessors."
