Achill's £2.08m lotto mystery solved
THE FOUR week long mystery of the Achill Island jackpot winner has been solved.A syndicate of seven people, who wish to remain anonymous, presented the winning ticket to the National Lottery yesterday (Tuesday).
This ends speculation that the ticket was lost on Croaghaun Mountain and another theory that it had ended up in Newport dump.
One of the winners said: "I felt sorry for the lad who thought he had won and I am glad that we have now put out of his misery.
"In fact, if I knew his address, I would like to send him a few pounds." The winning ticket was purchased in Keel Post office on August 27.
Each member of the group will collect £297,663 from the £2,083,643 jackpot.
PUTTING THE RIGHT FOOT FORWARD
Mr. Michael Ring T.D. will perform the official opening of the annual conference of the Irish Chiropodists/Podiatrists Organisation which will be staged in Hotel Westport on October 5 and 6.This is the 24th annual conference and it is the first time being held in Westport.
The conference is being organised by Mr. Patrick Kenny of Castlebar who is chairman of the Connaught Branch and national vice president of the Irish Chiropodists/Podiatrists Organisation.
Mr. Kenny has practised in Castlebar for twenty years and run the Mayo Foot Clinic.
TANTALISE YOUR SENSES
There will be a fund raising night in aid of the Celebration of the Senses festival in the Welcome Inn Hotel, Castlebar tonight (Wednesday) with the theme 'Tantalise your senses'.The night will feature True Colour Analysis, colour and image analysis with beauty therapist Joan McHale; Floral arranging by florist Mairead Horkan, Holistic Aromatherapy with therapist Noelene Cashin and a musical interlude with Helen Ratigan and Edel Burke.
Tickets in the door are £5 with £3 concessions.
SCUDS GROUNDED
Willie Joe Padden's 'Flying Scuds' who were to fly from Knock Airport to Dublin for the All-Ireland replay on Sunday have been grounded.Plans for the trip had to be cancelled because of the uncertainty over the Aer Lingus pilots strike.
CURAS ON ACHILL
The Irish language arts magazine programme 'Cursaí Ealaíne' on RTE One on Sunday evening (11.05) will feature the Achill Island Sculpture Symposium.It includes sound installation in the Deserted Village with artist Declan Kennedy, and a land reclamation project with artist Tony Manger. Peadar Seoighe and Pamela Hill talk about the Clochmore scheme and there will be an interview with John Coll, Mayo Arts Officer
LEUKAEMIA APPLE DAY
The Leukaemia Trust Apple day takes place in Castlebar on Friday, the proceeds from which go towards the fight against cancer. Members of the public are asked to buy an apple or an apple badge for £1.The Leukaemia trust was formed in 1995 to raise funds for the Cancer and Leukaemia Treatment Centre for the West of Ireland based at University College Hospital, Galway.
The aim of the Trust is to initially raise £1,000,000 to develop the facilities and necessary programmes for patient treatment, research and education.
FISHING TROUBLES ON RIVER MOY
The RTE One 'Ear To The Ground' programme on Monday (8.30p.m.) opens with a report by Ronan Clarke on the row over fishing rights on the River Moy which was recently the subject of a High Court case.SUICIDE SUPPORT GROUP

JOHN MAUGHAN has given the thumbs up to a song for Sam called "Let's go Mayo".Penned by up-and-coming rock band "WARD 9", the single will be released today (Wednesday) and is available county wide.
The song was first aired on Castlebar Community Radio on Monday and went down well with listeners.
BRITISH BUYERS JET TO KNOCK
Thirty-five British trade buyers and importers will arrive at Knock Airport tomorrow (Thursday) on a Bord Tráchtála organised group buyer visit.
The buyers, guests of twelve companies in the Mayo, Sligo, Roscommon and Galway areas will be welcomed to Ireland by Mr. Toddy O'Sullivan, Minister for State at the Department of Tourism and Trade.
