AWARDS TO GO INTERNATIONAL
SPINA Bifida victim 14-years old Sean Mulchrone from Newport made a special presentation to Government Chief Whip and Minister for State Jim Higgins.It was to mark the Minister's launching of the 1996 Mayo People of the Year Awards, nominations for which are now being accepted.
The awards scheme is run by Rehab in conjunction with AIB Bank and The Connaught Telegraph.
Minister Higgins received the presentation at a function in Carne Golf Club, Belmullet, from Sean who was one of the recipients of the Mayo People of the Year Awards last year for his courage and "I'll tryÓ attitude.
Nine awards in all will be presented at a gala function in the Welcome Inn Hotel on Friday night November 15, with two of then for overseas recipients.
And the awards are to go international from next year.
The event which honours outstanding Mayo people at home and abroad is now in its fourth year.
The organisers have decided to do away with the "overseasÓ tag and rename it the 'international' section.
The closing date for the receipt of entries for thsi year's awards is Wednesday October 9. Forms may be obtained from the Rehab workshop, Castlebar at any AIB Bank Branch or from the offices of the Connaught Telegraph.
