NEED FOR TREE SHREDDING UNITS

A CALL has been made for the setting up of shredding units in rural Ireland to help dispose of thousands of Christmas Trees which were taken down yesterday.

Such facilities are available in the cities but householders outside of these areas have great difficulty in getting rid of the unwanted trees. Now West Mayo Dail Deputy, Michael Ring has suggested that the State Forestry Agency, Coillte Teo. or local authorities should provide shredding facilities.

Deputy Ring said: "Otherwise the trees will become an environmental eyesore and will remain a blight on the countryside for many months to come."

SAW DOCS ANTHEM FOR CLARE ISLAND

TOP WEST of Ireland group the Saw Doctors are helping to sell the attraction of Mayo's largest off-shore community on Clare Island.

The Tuam band's current single "Take Me To Clare Island" is racing up the charts and its lyrics highlight the beauty of the outpost and could well become the anthem for the 50 householders on the five mile long island, the largest in Clew Bay.

It was written by Saw Doctors Leo Moran and Davy Carton which they describe as a bit of fantasy about a sensual weekend in a 'beautiful fresh location'.

Clare Island Development officer, Donal O'Shea stated: "There is no doubt that the song will help promote Clare Island and increase the numbers coming here for 1997."

Now Mr. O'Shea is to invite the Saw Doctors to write another song for the island's September Singles Weekend and have it launched at the festival this year.

He added: "There were several funny stories surrounding last year event - like a guy flying from Mexico, the Ballroom of Romance, fortune tellers and matchmakers - which could well be incorporated in a catchy Saw Doctors song."
