RING TO LOSE OUT IN GENERAL ELECTION

Mayo Deputy Michael Ring's head will be "On The Block" at the forthcoming General Election according to our new political analyst "Tallyman" who you can read this week, and every week on page 4.

His lively, controversial and snappy comments are sure to enrage many, bemuse others, but will always be a must to read each and every week.

Our regular columnists, Fr. Padraig Standún and Mairtín G. Maicin as well as a new "Those Were The Days" feature can also be found on page 4.

Each week we will also publish old photographs in a "Faces From The Past" feature.

TAUGHEEN SET DANCING

Set dancing classes will be held in Taugheen Hall every Wednesday night >from 9.30p.m. to 11p.m. Set dancing classes for children are held every Saturday evening at 6p.m.

CASTLEBAR POOL REOPENS

Castlebar Swimming Pool has been reopened to the public and is now available for children and adult swimming lessons, aqua aerobics, private groups and school bookings and public sessions.

CLAREMORRIS FG FUNCTION

Claremorris Fine Gael will hold a gala social in the Dalton Inn Hotel on Saturday night February 8 at 10p.m.

The guest speaker will be Minister Jim Higgins and music will be supplied by Matt's Lads. Tickets are £5.

HOSPICE ANNUAL MEETING

The annual general meeting of the Mayo/Roscommon Hospice Foundation will be held in the Belmont Hotel, Knock tonight (Wednesday) at 8.30p.m.

BORD FAILTE LAUNCH

Bord Failte and Ireland West Tourism will give details today of Tourism Brand Ireland - Relaunching a destination and 1997 plans at the Corrib Great Southern, Galway.

In attendance will be the Director General of Bord Failte, Matt McNulty and Noel Toolan, International Marketing Director, Bord Failte.

LIONS CLUB CELEBRATE 20 YEARS

Castlebar Lions Club will hold their 20th gala charter dinner dance in the Failte Suite of the Welcome Inn Hotel, Castlebar on Saturday night February 1.

President Michael McHale said a sub committee were working on tracing all former members and many other dignitaries would be in attendance.

Tickets are now available from any members at £25.

BREAKTHROUGH ON INISHBIGGLE HOVERCRAFT

The Department of the Marine has given the go-ahead, in principal, for the operation of a hovercraft service to a remote Co. Mayo island.

The 73 residents on Inishbiggle have been campaigning for years for a safe link to the mainland at Achill.

Westport businessman Tom King has now been informed by the Department that provided he meets all the necessary requirements he can run the 14-seater £350,000 Griffon hovercraft on the route.

A raging current makes the 300-yard currach crossing a daily threat for the inhabitants on the three-mile long outpost.

MULLEN BOOK LAUNCH

The Minister for Tourism and Trade, Mr. Enda Kenny will perform the official launch on Friday evening of the latest book "The Darkest Years" by Castlebar author, Michael Mullen, at the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar at 6.30p.m.

JOE MORAN TO RETIRE

The Chief Executive of the ESB, Castlebar man, Mr. Joe Moran, is to retire from the post later this year.

He joined the company in 1950 and prior to his appointment to the top post in 1991 he held a number of senior positions, including those of director finance, finance manger and corporate development manager.

ENVIRONMENTAL SURVEY

Students of Davitt College, Castlebar will embark on their EPA Environmental Survey tomorrow (Thursday). They had earmarked an environmental sector for which they have prepared and tested a questionnaire.

Members of the public are asked to co-operate with the survey, the findings of which will be published in due course.
