CATHOLICS ASKED TO FUND MAYO MOSQUE REPAIRS
By TOM SHIEL
The West of Ireland's Muslin population have issued an SOS to save their Mosque. An immediate financial injection is needed if the building in Ballyhaunis, with its unique onion-shaped dome, is to weather the elements.Since the departure from the town of Sher Rafique, who built the Mosque, the remaining fifty or so practising Muslims, have found it difficult to maintain the upkeep of the landmark.
Rafique left Ballyhaunis after the collapse of the Halal meat processing plant some years ago. Now an appeal has been made to the other religions dominations in Mayo to contribute to the Mosque repair fund.
Water is seeping into the building and cracks have appeared in the walls. Despite spending £10,000 on heating and repairs the problems continue to grow.
Mohammed Hani Kezze, one of the worshippers said: "It's a very serious problem. This is the House of God where everybody comes to pray but it is very, very costly to maintain.
"The situation has all changed since Mr. Rafique left. When he was here, things were perfect. He spent a lot of money on the building. We need somebody like him now to help us."
One of Mohammed's sons, twelve-year old Hazem attends the local St.. Mary's school where he has fitted in very well.
"They treat me marvellously. I love it there", he explained.
The Ballyhaunis Mosque is only the second in Ireland, the other being located in Dublin.
Each year the 200 or so Muslin children from around the country attend an
"Islamic Camp" in the Ballyhaunis Mosque, where they always receive a warm
welcome.
