SUPERMACS OPENS IN BALLINROBE

Supermac's family restaurant will open in Ballinrobe on Friday next March 14. Located at Cornmarket on the Galway Road, the project will create twenty new jobs. The local town development association has welcomed the jobs boost, stating, that they were welcome in Ballinrobe.

KILLALA FUNDRAISER

A major fundraising function will be held in the Golden Acres in Killala on Friday night March 14. Music will be provided by Damien McKale with a host of entertainers including Elsie McTigue, Damien Leydon, Milderd and Marie Byrne- dancers, and the Mickey Kelly dancers. All the proceeds from the night will go to the Mayo World International Enterprise Fund. The event is being supported by the 'Beat on the Peat volunteers' and the Mayo Association, Dublin. There will be a draw for numerous valuable prizes on the night and there is no cover charge.

'HEALTH-LINKS' SUPPLEMENT

'Health-Links', the twelve-page supplement published by the Western Health Board, covering all aspects of good health, is included with this week's Connaught Telegraph. One of the articles deals with how to reduce the risk of cot death, while another looks at a day in the life of a young carer.

RESIDENTS MEETING

A meeting of the Castlebar Town Centre residents will be held tonight (Wednesday) in McCarthy's pub, Main Street at 8.30p.m. All members are invited to attend when several matters of importance will be discussed.

CAT SCAN PROMOTION

The committee campaigning for the provision of a Cat Scan machine at the Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar are currently carrying out a door-to-door drive to sell their £100 tickers which offer £54,000 in prizes over three monthly draws.

TAUGHEEN CEILI

A Ceili will be held in Taugheen Community Centre on Saturday. Music will be by the Glenside Ceili band and refreshments will be served. All are welcome.

TEAGASC PRESENTATION

The Minister for Tourism and Trade, Enda Kenny will present certificates in the Teagasc Course on 'Women in Agriculture and Rural Development' at the Teagasc centre, Westport on Monday at 5p.m.

Distinction for Tourmakeady cameraman

Tourmakeady-based cameraman Tommy Eibrand has won major recognition. One of his photographs was selected for the 1997 Eircell Christmas Card selection. The award-winning picture, entitled 'Where is the Hay', features his own donkey in a field of snow at Glensaul, Tourmakeady . The 57-years-old Swedish born photographer was delighted to have his work chosen for the Eircell collection which will find it way into houses worldwide. "It is always a privilege to have your work acknowledged in this way." During a distinguished journalistic career, Tommy worked throughout the world, including the Middle East and in several African countries. He moved to Ireland in the mid-sixties and lived in Wicklow and Westport before taking up residence in Tourmakeady some years ago.

NCF ASSURANCE ON BONE MEAL

In response to recent publicity regarding the presence of meat and bone meal in feed samples in some Western counties, NCF co-op wishes to inform farmers that it has never used meat and bone meal in any feed compounds which it manufacturers. Mill manager Gabriel Lavin said that the NCF mill at Ballaghadeereen will, accordingly, fully comply with the National Beef Assurance Scheme relating to feed compounds being drafted at present by the Department of Agriculture. This includes the declaration of ingredients in descending order of inclusion by weight. "The NCF mill was awarded the ISO 9002 accreditation in 1994 which means that it operates to the highest standard in the industry", Mr. Lavin stressed.

ANNIE MAY IN NEW LIBRARY CHAIRMAN

Mayo County Councillor, Annie May Reape has been elected chairman of the Mayo Library Committee and replaces Councillor Eddie Staunton. On taking the chair she thanked her proposers Pat McHugh and Jimmy Maloney. During her term she hopes to bring to fruition a new library for the Crossmolina and Charlestown areas. She also plans to increase the number of meetings held by the committee during the year and plans to have one of those meetings in Ballina.

MIWADI HERITAGE AWARDS

Fourteen Mayo schools have entered the MiWadi National Heritage Awards 1997 which are being developed to stimulate an interest in Irish heritage among primary school pupils and their teachers. The schools involved are Banagher NS, Carrowmore, Lacken; Behymore NS, Ballina; Bullsmouth NS, Achill ; Cillmore NS, Newport; Cluolyon NS, Charlestown; Glencastle NS, Ballina; Gortjordan NS, Kilmaine; Killocraun NS, Ballina; Rehins NS, Ballina; S.N. Cuigie Beal Atha h-Anduais; Scoil Chroi Iosa, Ballina; St. Josephs NS, Bonniconlon, Ballina; St. Patrick's NS, Rathnamagh, Crossmolina and St. Tiernan's, Crossmolina.

BELCARRA CARD DRIVE

A Monster 25 card drive, in aid of the Belcarra national school fund will be held in Belcarra community centre on Monday night, commencing at 9p.m. Admission is £3 and there will be plenty of prizes on offer.

Di-ing for Lucan look-alike contest

Entries are being invited to participate in the Lord Lucan - Princess Diana look-alike contest, which is being held in conjunction with the Castlebar St. Patrick's Day Parade on Sunday week. Both Lucan and Di have connections with Castlebar going back hundreds of years. Now the organisers of the parade will offer special prized to the couple who best resemble the pair. Property owners in Castlebar are still paying ground rent to the estate of the Missing Lord Lucan who disappeared in November 1984 after the brutal murder of his children's nanny. Princess Di roots are firmly planted in the town where a street and a park are named after her family, the Spencers. Parade committee chairman, Johnny Mee said a number of entries have been received and they were expecting others. He stated: "This is meant to be a fun event. It is a novel event and already the contest has received international publicity." The Artane Boy Band, famed for their appearance at Croke Park, will be one of the many musical combinations taking part in the Castlebar parade.
