YOUNG ANGLERS TO TEST MASK

The Junior Association of the Castlebar Anglers Association will hold their first competition of the season which will be fished on Lough Mask (Churchfield) on Sunday March 23.

A bus will depart from the Welcome Inn Hotel at 10.30a.m. Lines will be up at 4p.m. and the youngsters will return to Castlebar at 5p.m. Participants, who fish at their own risk, must provide their own wet gear, rod and tackle, for this shore competition.

Membership of the club is £1 with a £1 entry fee for the competition. There will also be a charge for the bus. Weather permitting, a barbeque will be provided on the lakeshore. Further details next week.

PIECES EXHIBITION

The director of the Midland Arts Resource Centre, Mr. Albert Higgins will perform the official opening on Friday night (7.30p.m.) of an exhibition of 14,000 pieces + an installation and sculpture by Dympna Molloy at the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar

GOD AND ME

As part of the Lenten series "God and Me", The Irish Catholic on tomorrow's (Thursday) edition will feature an in-depth interview with the Bishop of Killala, Bishop Thomas Finnegan, in which he talks about the background for his own faith and prayer-life.

BALLINROBE PARADE

Assembly for the Ballinrobe St. Patrick's Day Parade will take place on Monday in Flanagan Park at 2p.m. with the parade commencing at 2.15. There will be a prize of £100 for the best float and £50 in prizes for the best fancy dress (sponsored by Martin Murphy, Newsagent.

There will be traditional music groups, bands, dancers and many, many floats.

Lunch will be provided afterwards for all participants, compliments of Ballinrobe Town Traders and the Railway Inn where the prizes will be presented.

SHORT STORY

The closing date for receipt of entries for the short story competition on Galway Bayfm's The Arts Show, is this Friday.

The winner will receive £100 in book vouchers with two runners-up getting £50 book voucher, compliments of Kenny's Bookshop.

The Arts Show is presented and produced by Bernadette Fallon. Entries should be sent to The Arts Show, Galway Bay fm, Sandy Road, Estate, Galway, and the competition is open to all writers.

MOY PLAN FINANCE

Tourism and Trade Minister Enda Kenny and Deputy Michael Ring have welcomed the announcement by Marine Minister Sean Barrett that a further £1.4m is to be invested in angling.

From that, £533,000 is to be used for the implementation of phase 4 of the Moy Development Plan.

GOLD TRAIN IN FOXFORD

Aisteoiri Beal Easa will present Gold Train by J. Bernard McCarthy in the Brown Memorial hall, Foxford on March 21, 22, 22 and on April 4 and 6, nightly at 8.30p.m.

This is a hilarious comedy set in hectic Ballyconneen railway station in the 1950's. It is the fifth production by the company in the past two years which saw they carry off a plethora of awards including best set, best actress, best performance and best lighting awards in the Connaught Drama Festival.

The producers are Michael Smyth and Breege O'Hara.

ELDERLY BALLYHAUNIS WOMAN SAVAGED BY PET DOG

An elderly Ballyhaunis couple are recovering from serious injuries which they received in a mauling from an Alsatian dog. Shiela and Tom McDonnell of Ballinphuill got the dog hoping he would protect them and their property.

But the "family pet" suddenly turned vicious and attacked Mrs. McDonnell who is in her seventies.

She sustained serious arm injuries and is being treated at the Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar.

Tom McDonnell was also injured but has not been detained in hospital. The dog was later shot by a neighbour. The McDonnell's came home from Britain some years ago to retire in the Ballyhaunis area. Neighbours are shocked by what happened.

One stated last night: "Tom and Shiela are a very nice couple who keep to themselves. They got this dog thinking he would protect them".
