Nick Faldo - major Irish golf project for Mayo?
FALDO TEES UP BARTRA ISLAND
FOR MAJOR GOLF PROJECT
By TOM SHIEL
Britain's top golfer Nick Faldo is among a consortium considering the purchase of Bartra Island in the Moy Estuary and turning it into a world class links.
The 367 acre island, with its numerous sand dunes, is an area of unrivalled peace and natural beauty and is considered ideal for such a project.
Representatives of the Faldo group have been in touch with Mayo County Council as well as the island owner, Mary Molloy about the proposed £30 million development.
The island has as its centrepiece Bartra House, a 300 year old building which would be ideal for turning into a stately and impressive clubhouse. Ms. Molloy, the founder and co-director of an international health training and treatment organisation, tried unsuccessfuly recently to secure American investment for an ambitious development plan. She envisaged Bartra House being renovated and the island being promoted as a unique centre for health and relaxation treatments as well as for seminars and conferences. The blueprint included plans for a marina, golf course and Timeshare complex.
Nick Faldo's consortium has been trying for some time to purchase an Irish golf course in pursuit of his dream to build the "ultimate links course". Recently, Faldo examined a number of possibilities in County Donegal but it is understood they have fallen through.
Mary Molloy was unavailable for comment yesterday on the latest developments but it is understood she is very enthusiastic about the proposal.
Mr. John Walkin, Ballina based former Chairman of Ireland West Tourism , said yesterday he would be delighted if the negotiations came to fruition.
"As a resource, the island is not fulfilling its potential", Mr. Walkin
stated. "There is room for a massive golf establishment there and the
fishing potential of the surrounding area is unlimited".
